Hornblower is seeking a Level 1 Marine Diesel Technician for our Hornblower Shipyard operation in Bridgeport/Stratford CT.

About You:

This person will be adaptable, dynamic, and embody Hornblower’s RESPECT Service System.

About the Opportunity:

The Level 1 Marine Diesel Technician works in a maritime setting; responsibilities involve installing, repairing, and replacing marine engines and generators and all associated equipment on commercial vessels. They will lead movements and installation of marine equipment and tools, conduct inspections and diagnostic tests, and mentor and train apprentice Marine Diesel Technicians.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on diesel engines and other machinery found on passenger vessels. This includes but may not be limited to diesel main engines, diesel auxiliary generators, water jet propulsion equipment, marine reduction gears, hydraulic systems for steering, cranes, and thrusters.
  • Perform heavy machinery maintenance and repair work including engine valve gear timings, injector changes, cylinder head and liner overhauls. This may also include machinery rigging in and out of vessels.
  • Perform water jet maintenance and repair while the vessel is in the water or in dry dock.
  • Perform vessel electrical troubleshooting and repair of generators, motors, control systems, sensors and related wiring; also, low voltage and battery powered starting, control, electronic control and monitoring systems.
  • Work alongside and support OEM service technicians.
  • Test and inspect installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive take-offs and material lists for repairs and overhauls.
  • Maintain documentation and monitoring of maintenance and repair work through the company web based and structured maintenance and repair program.
  • Participate in computer-based monitoring and input of maintenance tasks, work hours, and company training and documentation programs.
  • Lead movements and installation of Marine Equipment, and tools.
  • Conduct inspections & diagnostic tests to assess engine and system performance.
  • Perform complete engine overhauls and additional repairs as identified during the diagnostic process.
  • Conduct sea trials and system adjustments to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic control systems on diesel engines.
  • Utilize warranty programs and evaluate service and parts options to maintain cost efficiency.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records for all work performed.
  • Ensure a safe, organized work environment while adhering to company and industry standards.
  • Provide mentorship and training to apprentice marine technicians.
  • Communicate effectively with customers on-site to ensure satisfaction and clarity on service work.
  • Perform engine and generator commissioning trials and system optimizations.
  • Work the hours and shifts assigned by the Service Manager. This may include weekend or evening shifts and occasional overtime.
  • Communicate ideas for improving company processes with a positive and constructive attitude.
  • Conduct yourself with a positive and contagious attitude for others to emulate.
  • Keep the Service Manager and others informed about project status and issues that may impact client relations.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Must have 3+ years’ experience working in the marine or construction field
  • Experience working on construction sites and with power tools
  • Knowledge of construction site best practices and safety procedures
  • Experienced with motor vessel machinery troubleshooting, maintenance and repair - on vessels such as work boats, tugs, fishing vessels, passenger vessels, or vessels of the U.S. Armed forces and/or diesel or heavy machinery mechanics from and trades institution, U.S. Armed forces, or other industries that require hands on repair of engines and engine related systems is preferred.
  • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to interact effectively with all levels throughout Company organization
  • Strong diagnostic abilities for diesel engine performance issues
  • Proficiency with laptop/PC-based diagnostic tools.
  • Expertise in reading service manuals, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Experience with electrical multi-meters and diesel engine electronic controls.
  • Ability to complete repairs efficiently and independently.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license and insurable under company policy.
  • Own a full set of mechanic’s tools.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within an assigned area (including potential international travel).
  • TWIC card is a plus.
  • Completion of company-provided manufacturer training (online and in-person)
