Illinois House of Representatives Office of the Speaker

The Legislative Unit of the Office of the Speaker provides direct, one-on-one legislative support to Democratic members of the Illinois House of Representatives. Successful candidates should handle both large and small tasks, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and manage a diverse workload. Each Legislative Coordinator generally supports several members and reports to a Senior Legislative Coordinator. The position is based in Springfield, Illinois, and is not remote or hybrid.

Responsibilities
  • Develop legislative agendas and assist with bill drafting in coordination with Research, Legal Units, and Senior Coordinators;
  • Maintain files on legislation, track bill statuses, and prepare related materials such as talking points;
  • Staff legislative committees and ensure members’ attendance to facilitate legislation passage;
  • Develop district outreach plans, share outreach opportunities, and support constituent engagement;
  • Manage members’ Springfield office, serve as the first point of contact, schedule meetings, and coordinate local travel;
  • Coordinate visits by local organizations and groups to Springfield;
  • Attend and document meetings as needed;
  • Provide administrative support, including handling correspondence and calls.
Qualifications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work in an unpredictable environment and willingness to work long hours when necessary;
  • Professional demeanor and adaptability to different personalities;
  • Interest in state government, politics, policy, current affairs, public service, or nonprofit work, especially in Democratic politics;
  • Proficiency with computers;
  • Spanish language skills (written and oral), with certification in translation, are preferred;

Work is primarily performed in the Illinois Capitol Complex in Springfield, which is open to the public and secured by the Illinois Secretary of State Police. The environment can be noisy and congested. Candidates must be able to remain stationary for extended periods and move about as needed. Frequent communication with staff, legislators, lobbyists, and the public requires professionalism and accuracy. Typical hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on non-session days, with potential weekend work.

Salary starts at $49,000 annually. Benefits include health, dental, vision, prescription, behavioral health, life insurance, participation in the State Employees' Retirement System, optional health savings accounts, deferred compensation, and paid time off.
