Job summary

Commonwealth of Kentucky seeks a Committee Analyst for the Judiciary Committee within the Legislative Research Commission in Frankfort. The role is nonpartisan and requires neutrality in a politically charged environment; a Juris Doctor is required.

The analyst will draft legislation, analyze issues, coordinate with committee staff, and participate in task forces and meetings. Occasional overtime is expected during sessions; healthcare, retirement, and paid time off are provided.

  • No direct experience is required. However, experience and knowledge relating to legal drafting and/or interpretation may be preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Draft legislation, provide statutory committee reviews, review administrative regulations, and communicate information in a detailed and concise manner for legislators, staff, and non-staff as requested.
  • Research and analyze issues related to the committee’s jurisdiction, or other issues as assigned.
  • Communicate with the Committee Staff Administrator and other committee staff about assignments and needs of the committee.
  • Serve on multidisciplinary task forces and research projects.
  • Help arrange committee meetings and provide assistance at meetings.
  • Act as lead staff when requested for interim and session meetings or task forces.
  • Work with other LRC staff on the production of related and applicable LRC publications.
  • Learn agency policies and procedures and attend trainings as needed or directed.
  • Require limited travel for committee meetings, meetings with legislators, and other occasions as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Description

The Legislative Research Commission (LRC) is accepting applications for the position of Committee Analyst with the Judiciary Committee. This position is nonpartisan in nature and requires the ability to work with neutrality in a politically charged environment. A Juris Doctor is required for this position.

The Legislative Research Commission provides staff support to the Kentucky General Assembly. The agency offers unique opportunities to people seeking fulfilling, challenging, and rewarding careers. The individual selected for this position should have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and be public service oriented with the ability to maintain a good rapport with legislative members, LRC staff, state employees, and the general public. The individual should be able to work under stress, with the understanding that during legislative sessions and occasionally during the interim period, working significant amounts of overtime will be required.

This is a permanent, full-time, in-person position with benefits including health and life insurance; retirement plan; and paid holidays, vacation, and sick days. Compensatory time is awarded on an hour-for-hour basis with prior approval.

Job Duties

  • Basic computer skills with knowledge of Windows Office products, or demonstrated ability to learn Windows Office products.
  • Ability to work in a nonpartisan manner and to avoid any partisan activities or what may be perceived as partisan activities.
Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: A Juris Doctor is required.
