Legal Translator, Editor, and Transcriber - Bengali to/from English - Remote

Status: Freelance contractor

Global Language Strategies, a language services business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is seeking professional freelance translators, editors, and transcribers to translate, edit, and/or transcribe legal documents between English and Bengali.

Job Duties:

• Provide accurate translation and/or editing of documents and transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from Bengali to/from English.
• Edit legal audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
• Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and Bengali.
• Excellent written communication skills in English and Bengali, with Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in both languages, as assessed by the ILR scale.
• Translate and/or transcribe following the government client’s style guides and quality standards.
• Use domain-specific terminology.
• Review and certify the quality of other translators’ work, as needed.
• Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Familiar with CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
• Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

• A U.S. citizen willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• At least 3 years of experience in legal translating and/or editing between English and Bengali.
• At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with software to enhance sound quality.
• Familiar with legal terminology in both English and Bengali.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office.
• Proficient in CAT tools such as SDL Trados.

Preferred Qualifications:

• ATA, NAJIT, or other relevant professional certification.
