LOCATION:

Hybrid Remote – Dallas, Texas

OVERVIEW:

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) seeks a dynamic, self-starting individual with vision, initiative, and a demonstrated commitment to public interest law to fill a legal secretary position with the Housing, Consumer & Public Benefits Unit in its Dallas office.

DESCRIPTION:

LANWT is a non-profit public interest law firm that provides high-quality free civil legal services to low-income persons across 114 counties in North and West Texas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide support for multiple full-time staff attorneys, including secretarial support, correspondence, legal pleadings, filing, and translation/interpretation services.
  2. Ensure compliance with the Legal Services Corporation Act, regulations, and LANWT policies.
  3. Prepare legal documents and correspondence, type and transcribe, and proofread for accuracy.
  4. Proficiently use MS Word, databases, and LANWT’s case management system.
  5. File legal papers at courthouses or via e-filing, set hearing dates, and communicate with court staff, opposing parties, and clients.
  6. Conduct client interviews by phone and in person; provide backup support as needed.
  7. Translate for clients when applicable.
  8. Maintain case status and legal files electronically and physically.
  9. Maintain logs, schedules, confidentiality, and professionalism at all times.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  2. Fluent in Spanish (verbal and written) – required.
  3. Prior law office secretarial experience preferred.
  4. Experience in bankruptcy and/or tax law is a plus.
  5. Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  6. Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain professionalism.
  7. Willingness to travel occasionally.
  8. Excellent attendance record.
SALARY:

Starting at $35,640 per year, with potential increases based on experience.
