Job summary

Pacific Coast Companies, Inc. is seeking a curious, analytical Legal Counsel to join a tight-knit, collaborative Legal Department.

This full-time role reports to the Chief Legal Officer and will help protect the company's interests across employment, construction, compliance, and corporate matters. You'll gain broad exposure to litigation and regulatory issues, work with seasoned mentors, and partner with operations, HR, and leadership to balance legal analysis with practical business solutions

Qualifications

• J.D. degree required; admission to practice preferred.
• 0-2 years of relevant legal experience.
• Exposure to employment laws and litigation, construction laws and litigation, compliance, or regulatory matters is preferred.
• Experience conducting legal research, writing, and issue analysis.

Responsibilities

• Assist in defense of employment-related litigation, including wrongful termination, wage and hour, PAGA, and other workplace matters with the goal of handling such claims on your own.
• Assist in the defense of construction defect claims, OSHA citations, collections matters, and other legal disputes, with the goal of handling such claims on your own.
• Conduct legal research and analysis to support litigation strategy and business decisions.
• Gather, organize, and review documents for case preparation and legal proceedings.
• Monitor case progress and provide updates to internal stakeholders.

In this role, you'll play a vital part in protecting the interests of a global company while supporting business leaders across Pacific Coast Companies, Inc. and its affiliated subsidiaries. You'll gain broad exposure to litigation, employment law, construction-related matters, compliance, and corporate legal initiatives while being trained by a former Judge and a former law firm partner, both with 40+ years of legal experience.

What You'll Do

• Assist in the defense of employment-related litigation, including wrongful termination, wage and hour, PAGA, and other workplace matters with the goal of handling such claims on your own

• Conduct legal research and analysis to support litigation strategy and business decisions

• Monitor case progress and provide updates to internal stakeholders

Legal Advisory & Business Partnership

• Partner with business leaders and field personnel to identify and address potential legal risks
• Provide practical legal guidance that supports operational and strategic objectives
• Research legal issues impacting day-to-day business activities and long-term initiatives
• Support and collaborate with:
• Operations and field leadership
• Human Resources
• Executive leadership and business stakeholders
• Assist with evaluating legal implications of business decisions and operational practices
• Help ensure compliance with legal, contractual, corporate, and risk management policies
• Identify opportunities to reduce organizational risk and strengthen business processes
• Assist with responses to regulatory inquiries and legal matters
• Support litigation strategy discussions and recommendations with internal and external partners
• Maintain and update:
• Legal policies and procedures
• Litigation and case management records
• Support compliance, audit, reporting, and knowledge-sharing efforts across teams

External Counsel & Case Coordination

• Coordinate with outside counsel on ongoing legal matters
• Manage document requests, gather information, and case-related communications
• Assist with subpoena responses and other legal information requests
• Support projects and special assignments as business needs evolve
• Stay current on emerging trends, tools, and best practices within employment law, construction litigation, compliance, and corporate legal operations
• Support strategic initiatives, process improvements, and organizational enhancements
• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts across the Legal Department

What You Bring

Experience & Education

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree or equivalent legal education required
• 0-2 years of relevant legal experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Exposure to employment laws and litigation, construction laws and litigation, compliance, or regulatory matters is preferred
• Experience conducting legal research, writing, and issue analysis

Technical Skills

• Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
• Legal research platforms and online legal resources
• Document management and case tracking systems
• Business communication and collaboration tools

Bonus points if you have experience with:

• Construction industry legal issues
• OSHA, regulatory, or compliance-related matters

Certifications

• Admission to practice law in another state is a plus
• Additional legal, compliance, or risk management certifications are advantageous
