Job description

Our client is a profitable, high-growth fintech company focused on expanding access to financial services for consumers underserved by traditional financial institutions. With significant growth over the past several years and a lean, technology-driven operating model, the company is entering an exciting new phase of expansion.

As the business broadens its consumer financial product offering, it is seeking an entrepreneurial legal professional who can help guide product development, manage regulatory risk, and build efficient legal and compliance operations.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Legal & Compliance Counsel to take ownership of its legal and compliance function and support the development of new consumer financial products. Reporting directly to a founder, this attorney will advise on product strategy, regulatory requirements, licensing, financial institution partnerships, and day-to-day legal matters. The role combines strategic product counseling with hands-on execution, offering substantial autonomy and the opportunity to shape how legal and compliance operations evolve as the company grows.

The ideal candidate has experience working within a high-growth fintech startup, understands the consumer financial regulatory landscape, and enjoys finding practical, technology-enabled solutions to complex legal challenges. This is an excellent fit for someone who wants broad responsibility, close collaboration with product and engineering teams, and the opportunity to build a legal function designed for scale.

Responsibilities
  • Own the company's legal and compliance function, advising the founder and business teams on legal strategy, regulatory risk, and business priorities.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to structure and launch new consumer financial products, identifying efficient paths to market and minimizing unnecessary regulatory obligations.
  • Advise on consumer finance laws, including FCRA, UDAAP, TILA/Reg Z, ECOA, EFTA/Reg E, and applicable state lending and money transmission requirements.
  • Oversee licensing, entity structuring, bank partnerships, and related regulatory obligations for new and existing products.
  • Draft and maintain necessary policies, procedures, disclosures, product terms, and commercial agreements. Review marketing, customer communications, and product experiences.
  • Manage BSA/AML, KYC, fraud, privacy, and broader compliance matters, including regulatory examinations, audits, complaints, disputes, and litigation.
  • Build and improve AI-enabled workflows to automate legal research, drafting, policy maintenance, and compliance monitoring while maintaining high standards of accuracy and legal judgment.
  • Manage outside counsel and communicate clear, actionable legal guidance to founders, product, engineering, and other stakeholders.
  • Support broader corporate, commercial, employment, and intellectual property matters as needed.
Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar admission in good standing in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Prior legal or compliance experience at a fintech startup, ideally a high-growth company.
  • Hands-on experience advising on regulated consumer financial products from development through launch and ongoing operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of consumer finance regulations, particularly FCRA, UDAAP, TILA/Reg Z, ECOA, EFTA/Reg E, and state lending or money transmission licensing.
  • Experience working directly with product and engineering teams to address regulatory considerations during product development.
  • Familiarity with bank partnership programs and financial institution relationships.
  • Experience managing compliance policies, outside counsel, and relationships with financial partners or regulators.
  • Ability to independently manage a broad legal and compliance portfolio in a fast-paced, lean environment.
Preferred Skills
  • Direct experience with BSA/AML, KYC, fraud prevention, licensing, and regulatory examinations.
  • Experience designing products or processes to minimize regulatory complexity and unnecessary compliance obligations.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools, agentic workflows, or automation for legal and compliance operations.
  • A multidisciplinary background spanning legal, product, engineering, or business functions.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and interest in expanding financial access for underserved consumers.
Pay Range and Compensation Package
  • Base salary: $200,000-$280,000, depending on experience and qualifications
  • Equity participation
  • Fully remote work environment
