Job summary

ELG Solutions is seeking a skilled Legal Assistant to support the USAO - District of Vermont. The role includes preparing and processing complex legal documents, reviewing materials, and drafting documents with limited guidance.

Responsibilities cover docketing, maintaining files, and producing properly formatted documents under tight deadlines in an in-person Burlington, VT setting. A year of related legal experience and proficiency with MS Office, Adobe, and legal research tools are required.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of related legal experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience and expertise in performing the required services outlined in the Statement of Work.
  • Related experience working with a federal or state legal or law enforcement entity is preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating a personal computer, scanner, and other automated office equipment.
  • Ability to read, speak, and write English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Familiarity with LexisNexis and/or Westlaw.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain adjudication for the requisite background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Examine, prepare, and process a variety of technical legal documents that are often voluminous and complex in format.
  • Review incoming materials and independently determine the need for assembly and preparation of various legal documents.
  • Obtain necessary information from appropriate sources and submit drafted legal documents to the appropriate AUSA.
  • Prepare responsive documents with limited instructions from the AUSA.
  • Complete various aspects of recurring legal documents in accordance with established rules, styles, and formatting requirements.
  • Develop tables of contents and indices for briefs according to established formats.
  • Prepare lists of cited cases, opinions, and miscellaneous references in briefs.
  • Compose original correspondence that does not require legal interpretation but requires knowledge of legal procedures and specialized terminology.
  • Establish and maintain various legal files.
  • Search legal reference files for information requested by AUSAs.
  • Separate, screen, select, assemble, and organize files and records for disposition or transfer in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform docketing duties, including opening, updating, and closing cases using automated case-tracking systems.
  • Search databases for required case information as necessary.
  • Maintain calendars for assigned active cases, including filing and hearing dates.
  • Develop and maintain a suspense system for ongoing cases and notify the AUSA of upcoming deadlines and important dates.
  • Maintain AUSA calendars and provide reminders regarding commitments and court appearances.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using office software applications.
  • Ensure documents have proper formatting, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the responsibilities above.
