Introduction

In meeting this mission, Attorney General Kathy Jennings is supported by teams of talented lawyers and staff in various divisions, including Criminal, Civil, Family, Fraud and Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights and Public Trust.

Each of the more than 500 staff who work in the Office of the Attorney General are dedicated to serving all Delawareans with integrity and passion. Deputy Attorneys General, supported by criminal investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce laws, provide counsel, ensure transparency, and protect the vulnerable.

Summary Statement

The Criminal Division seeks a Legal Administrative Specialist to support Deputy Attorneys General in prosecuting crimes within the Misdemeanor Trial Unit (Court of Common Pleas) in Sussex County. Responsibilities include managing files, running criminal record checks, typing, report requests, discovery responses, calendar management, document filing, and subpoena preparation. The role also involves rotation as backup to the main Criminal Division Receptionist during absences.

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, proficient in Microsoft Word, with excellent spelling, grammar, and proofreading skills. They should handle multiple tasks efficiently, interact professionally with the public, and answer phones accurately. Knowledge of DELJIS, LEISS, and Enforcer is a plus but not required.

Position Details

This is a casual/seasonal position, approved for up to 37.5 hours per week, non-pension, without healthcare or other benefits.

Essential Functions
  • Apply agency laws, rules, policies in processing information.
  • Serve as liaison with the public and agency staff.
  • Coordinate operational functions for the unit/attorneys.
  • Arrange legal paperwork delivery.
  • Type legal documents and correspondence.
  • Schedule court dates and meetings.
  • Establish tracking systems and follow-up procedures.
  • Maintain legal data and filing systems.
Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate competence in the following areas:

For Level I:
  • Associate’s degree or higher, or
  • One year of experience in office coordination, document processing, and computer skills, including legal terminology knowledge.
For Level II:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, or
  • Three years of relevant experience in office coordination, document processing, and computer skills, including legal terminology and law interpretation.
For Level III:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, and two years of experience in office coordination, legal document preparation, law interpretation, or
  • Six years of similar employment within the Department of Justice or equivalent experience in office coordination, document processing, and legal terminology.
