Job Goal
To evaluate ways to enhance student wellness and its wellness program. With the assistance of the Supervisor of Guidance, look to expand programs and opportunities provided by the district for parents, students and faculty.
Job Functions & Responsibilities
- Adheres to laws, board policies, district regulations, school procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.
- Plans and maintains an effective comprehensive school counseling program.
- Maintains on-going dialogue regarding the comprehensive school counseling program with school administrators
- Assists in the development of the program plan for the effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the NJ Standards, current “best practices” in school counseling, and in response to district and individual school data.
- Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders and community members.
- Maintains and shares current appropriate resources for education students, parents, staff and community members.
- Delivers a comprehensive school counseling program through guidance curriculum, individual student planning, preventive and responsive services and system support.
- Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide integration of the Guidance Curriculum.
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans when appropriate.
- Collaborates with parent/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning when appropriate.
- Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs.
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process.
- Accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
- Provides appropriate information to staff related to the comprehensive school counseling program.
- Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
- Assists teachers, parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
- Provides leadership to the Intervention and Referral Services Team (I&RS) pursuant to N.J.A.C.6A16-7.3
- Willingly serves as team leader, record keeper, time keeper, and/or case coordinator as determined by the school principal.
- Provides leadership and student advocacy in the development of I&RS action plans.
- Assists in the scheduling and communication needs of the I&RS team.
- Works with parents to encourage full and active participation in the I&RS process.
- Maintains written records of all I&RS action plans.
- Assists in the annual review of data from I&RS action plans to ensure a reflective process aimed at enhancing every students’ opportunity for academic, emotional, and social success.
- Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills relevant to their role as school counselor.
- Uses available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
- Assists in the organization, administration and interpretation of the District’s testing program.
- Assists in the orientation of new students in the District and assists in scheduling, where needed.
- Performs other tasks as assigned by the Administration.
- Works to resolve students’ educational handicaps.
- Helps students evaluate career interests and choices as they prepare for high school.
- Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.
- Serves as a liaison to the court, other outside agencies and departments within the school district.
- Conducts group guidance sessions for students.
- Guides students in their participation in school and community activities.
- Maintains and keeps secure student records, protecting their confidentiality at all times.
- Confers with parents whenever necessary.
- Assists in the development of in-service programs for teachers in the guidance area.
- Advises administrators and faculty on the matters of student discipline, as needed.
- Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
- Serves as a consultant in curriculum development.
- Arranges for tutors and summer school work.
- Coordinates and implements orientation program for incoming students and their parents.

- Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
- Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities.
- Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment.
- Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
Qualifications
The Wellness Counselor shall:
- Hold a New Jersey Certificate as a School Counselor or in Student Personnel Services.
- Criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status and a complete physical examination.
- Hold an earned Master’s Degree or higher.
- Have three years of classroom teaching.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
- Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
- Demonstrate the ability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
- Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the Department of Education. During the initial six-month period provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly persons offense in accordance with 18A:6-7.1.
- Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
- Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6:3-4A.4.
- Meet such alternatives to the above qualifications, as the Superintendent may deem appropriate, acceptable, and legal.
