About the Position
We are seeking a patient, dependable, and experienced learning coach to provide individualized support for a fifth-grade student. The ideal candidate will help our child stay on track academically, develop stronger learning habits, and build confidence in a calm, encouraging environment.
Our child benefits from clear directions, predictable routines, repetition, movement breaks, and instruction broken into manageable steps. We are looking for someone who can combine academic support with daily organization, accountability, and positive encouragement.
This role may include supporting an online school program, depending on the family’s final educational arrangement. Candidates should be comfortable helping an elementary student navigate lessons, complete assignments, and participate consistently in learning.
Primary Responsibilities
Daily Learning Structure and Accountability
- Establish and follow a predictable daily learning routine.
- Review the school calendar, assignments, deadlines, and learning priorities.
- Help the student begin tasks, stay engaged, and complete work with increasing independence.
- Break longer assignments into smaller steps with clear, achievable goals.
- Use visual schedules, checklists, timers, and planned breaks as appropriate.
- Maintain an organized workspace and help the student manage materials.
- Provide active guidance throughout scheduled sessions and adjust support when the student becomes distracted or overwhelmed.
Academic Support
- Reinforce school lessons and identify concepts that need additional explanation or practice.
- Provide targeted math support, including foundational computation, number sense, and word problems.
- Use hands-on materials, visual examples, and real-life applications to make concepts easier to understand.
- Support writing through brainstorming, graphic organizers, sentence development, paragraph organization, and revision.
- Assist with reading comprehension, following written directions, and understanding assignment expectations.
- Check for understanding by asking the student to explain or demonstrate what she has learned.
- Help the student complete her own work and gradually reduce prompting as skills improve.
- Communicate persistent learning gaps to the parent so additional instructional support can be considered.
Organization and Executive Function Skills
- Teach practical strategies for planning, prioritizing, time management, and task completion.
- Help the student learn how to ask for clarification and recognize when she needs assistance.
- Build routines for checking work, submitting assignments, and preparing for the next lesson.
- Track the level of prompting needed and encourage increasing independence.
- Use consistent, positive reinforcement to recognize effort, persistence, and progress.
Confidence and Emotional Support
- Develop a warm, respectful working relationship with the student.
- Respond calmly to frustration, avoidance, or difficulty getting started.
- Help the student practice taking a break, regrouping, and returning to a challenging task.
- Encourage a positive view of learning and recognize strengths alongside areas of difficulty.
- Maintain clear expectations without shaming, threats, comparisons, or punitive discipline.
- Support appropriate self-advocacy and problem-solving.
School and Parent Communication
- Provide a brief update after each session outlining work completed, challenges, and next steps.
- Maintain a simple weekly progress log showing assignment completion, skills practiced, and emerging concerns.
- Notify the parent promptly about missed assignments, recurring confusion, or significant changes in engagement.
- Follow relevant accommodations and learning strategies shared by the parent.
- With parental permission, coordinate with teachers, tutors, or other educational professionals.
- Attend occasional planning meetings with the parent to review progress and adjust support.
Online School Support, If Applicable
- Help the student log in on time and prepare for live classes.
- Navigate the school’s learning platform, assignment portal, and communication tools.
- Monitor participation and support appropriate use of devices during learning hours.
- Help upload and submit completed work.
- Track attendance requirements and deadlines, and alert the parent to issues.
- Support the school’s curriculum and teacher instructions.

- A patient, calm, encouraging approach with clear and consistent expectations.
- Comfort using educational websites, video meeting platforms, and online assignment systems.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to follow an agreed-upon learning plan.
- Willingness to provide references and complete background screening and applicable child-safety clearances before starting.
- Respect for the child’s privacy and the confidentiality of family and educational information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in education, special education, psychology, child development, or a related field.
- Teaching certification or experience as a special education teacher, interventionist, paraprofessional, or learning specialist.
- Experience implementing IEP accommodations and individualized learning strategies.
- Experience with ADHD, foundational math intervention, and elementary writing instruction.
- Experience supporting online or homeschool learning.
- Familiarity with multisensory teaching methods and positive behavior supports.
