Overview

Oversees laboratory operations across multiple technical disciplines with minimal supervision. Performs routine and complex analyses on blood and other body fluids using laboratory instruments and information systems. Ensures standardized work across disciplines or shifts, maintaining quality and implementing corrective actions. Provides input for staff performance and development. Frequently interacts with customers.

Responsibilities

1. Provides technical and operational leadership across disciplines, locations, or workstations with minimal supervision. May lead meetings and represent the laboratory.
2. Performs and oversees complex procedures in chemical, cytologic, hematologic, histologic, microscopic, immunologic, and microbiologic testing using manual or automated techniques.
3. Uses clinical judgment to develop solutions, improve processes, and resolve problems. Ensures quality control, instrument performance, and accurate results. Diagnoses causes of unexpected results.
4. Performs calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and may perform specimen processing and testing independently after competency assessment.
5. Teaches staff, ensures compliance with policies, and maintains confidentiality of patient information.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science from an accredited program.
• At least 5 years of progressive experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
• Technologist or medical/clinical laboratory scientist certification from a recognized agency (preferred: ASCP, NCA, ASM, AABB, ACS, HEW).
