Job summary

Johnson Controls is seeking a Lead Welder to oversee daily welding and fabrication activities, provide technical leadership, and mentor apprentices in a manufacturing environment. You will interpret drawings, ensure weld quality, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

The role emphasizes adherence to welding procedures, safety standards, and documentation, with a strong focus on process improvement and training of team members in MIG, TIG, and FCAW processes.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 5+ years welding and fabrication in manufacturing.
  • 2+ years in lead/mentor/senior welder role.
  • Experience welding carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum.
  • Ability to pass welding qualification tests.
  • Strong blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation.
  • Experience using precision measuring tools: tape measures, calipers, squares, levels, angle gauges.
  • Proficient with manual and semi-automatic welding equipment.
  • Working knowledge of welding inspections and quality systems.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate daily welding, fitting, and fabrication activities.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, and fabrication instructions.
  • Verify fit-up, alignment, and weld preparation prior to welding.
  • Ensure welds meet visual acceptance criteria and quality requirements.
  • Mentor apprentices and junior welders.
  • Conduct in-process and final visual inspections of weldments.
  • Collaborate with Quality and Engineering to investigate nonconformances.
  • Support Kaizen and continuous improvement initiatives.
