Job Title: Plant Lead – Third Shift

Reports to: Production Supervisor

Department: Plant Operations / Manufacturing

FLSA status: Non-Exempt

Revised date: 10/30/26

Position Summary:

The Plant Lead – Third Shift is a hands-on working leader responsible for keeping overnight production safe, organized, and on schedule at the Freeland Manufacturing plant. This position coordinates daily work, monitors production and quality, provides immediate coaching, and responds to staffing and equipment issues. The Lead works alongside the team as needed and communicates issues requiring management action to the Production Supervisor.

Key Outcomes / Measures of Success:

  • Lead shift execution – Coordinate third-shift startup, assigned production priorities, operator placement, and end-of-shift completion to meet daily output expectations.
  • Monitor production by line, table, or work area during the shift; identify output gaps, quality issues, and downtime early and take appropriate action within assigned authority.
  • Assign and adjust daily work based on production priorities, attendance, and employee qualifications; notify the supervisor of staffing or coverage gaps.
  • Verify operators are trained and authorized for their assigned work and equipment, including powered industrial trucks and specialized production equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate coverage for critical third-shift operations, including frame production, PFG work, and qualified forklift support, as scheduled.
  • Work alongside operators when needed to maintain throughput, demonstrate standard work, and help the team resolve routine production challenges.
  • Check product quality throughout the shift; reinforce specifications, labeling, work-order accuracy, and approved methods and address defects or rework promptly.
  • Identify equipment problems and material constraints; coordinate with Maintenance or other support groups and promptly identify significant downtime.
  • Ensure production counts, downtime, scrap or rework, and other required shift records are completed accurately and on time.
  • Monitor attendance, break adherence, and shift coverage; report discrepancies and scheduling concerns to the supervisor in accordance with company procedures.
  • Train and coach new and existing employees on standard work, productivity, quality, safety, and housekeeping; reinforce expectations consistently.
  • Observe and address routine performance concerns through timely feedback; document factual concerns and refer recurring or serious issues to plant leadership.
  • Promote safe work practices, required PPE, machine guarding, proper material handling, and compliance with individual work restrictions.
  • Stop or redirect unsafe activity, report hazards and near misses, and promptly raise workplace injuries, conduct concerns, and suspected policy violations.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly work area and reinforce 5S and material-staging standards to support safe and efficient plant operations.
  • Support cross-training and identify gaps in skill coverage so the shift can adapt to absences and equipment interruptions.
  • Help coordinate production materials, work in process, finished goods, and transfers so the next process or shift can operate without avoidable delays.
  • Escalate urgent staffing, safety, quality, maintenance, and production issues promptly; perform other duties as assigned to meet operational needs.

Communication, Coordination & Reporting:

  • Provide a complete shift handoff covering production results, work remaining, attendance and staffing gaps, downtime, quality concerns, safety issues, and follow-up actions to the supervisor and incoming shift.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This is a working lead role and does not have formal direct-report supervisory responsibilities. The Plant Lead directs day-to-day work and provides on-the-job coaching within established standards. Hiring, termination, formal discipline, compensation, leave approval, and other personnel decisions remain with authorized plant management and Human Resources.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; relevant manufacturing experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.
  • Two or more years of manufacturing, production, or warehouse experience preferred; previous experience as a lead, trainer, or senior operator is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of production workflows, standard work, basic quality controls, and plant safety expectations.
  • Ability to interpret production schedules and work orders and accurately record output, downtime, attendance, or shift information in designated systems.
