Job summary

Nashville Veterinary Specialists + Animal Emergency (NVS) is seeking a Lead Veterinary Technician - ER to supervise ER technicians and guide clinical care in a busy 24/7 hospital in Nashville, TN. You will help triage, train staff, and ensure timely, compassionate care for emergency patients.

The role emphasizes advanced procedures, anesthesia monitoring, and strong team leadership within a growing ER team and hospital environment.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Tennessee or registry eligible; must obtain TN license within 12 months.
  • Minimum one year of emergent or critical care clinical experience.
  • One to two years of supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and support for ER technicians and assistants.
  • Ensure ER service maintains efficient workflow and timely triage.
  • Train staff on hospital policies and protocols; communicate with doctors.
  • Oversee patient care, monitor anesthesia, and assist in advanced procedures.
  • Assign staff to teams and manage shift breaks.
  • Support ICU staff and participate in training and onboarding.
  • Serve as main point of contact for shift issues; perform other duties as needed.

Position Summary:

The lead ER technician will provide direct supervision and support for ER technicians, assistants and veterinary technician assistants. The lead ER technician will ensure the ER service maintains an efficient work flow that ensures patients are triaged and evaluated by a technician and doctor in a timely manner. They will ensure clients are kept updated on the status of their pets throughout the stay with the assistance of the remote triage team, client care coordinator and client service representatives. They will work on the floor to provide clinical and technical training on hospital policies and protocols and maintain clear and open communication with the team and doctors. The lead ER technician will ensure all ER patients are adequately cared for and the ER technicians on the floor feel supported and take designated breaks.

Position Responsibilities:

Primary patient care responsibilities including triage, assessments, IV catheter placement, medication administration, fluid and CRI calculations as well as advanced procedures such as nasogastric tube placements, urinary catheter placements, laceration repairs, anesthesia monitoring, etc.

Assign ER technicians/assistants to specific job titles or teams as directed by attending doctor

Ensure all ER patients receive treatments and diagnostics in a timely manner

Ensure ER technicians, assistants and veterinary technician assistants take designed shift breaks

Provide support for ICU technicians and work closely with lead ICU technician to ensure patients are admitted to the ICU in a timely manner

Provide support for ER and ICU patient care managers in regards to working interviews, training and onboarding as directed.

Serve as point of contact for any issues that arise during a shift

Other duties as assigned to support the hospital services

Skills and Qualifications:

Advanced technical knowledge and skills

Excellent communication, interpersonal and team skills

Handles multiple demands, increased workload and changes in work environment with ease and professionalism.

Preferred Qualifications :

One to two years supervisory experience in a similar setting

Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program

Licensed Veterinary Technician in Tennessee or registry eligible. If registry eligible, must acquire a state of Tennessee license within 12 months from date of hire or transfer.

Minimum of one year of emergent or critical care clinical experience
