Job summary

Sumitomo Biorational Company Biorational Research Center in Libertyville, IL seeks a senior fermentation scientist to lead upstream process development, conducting fermentation experiments in lab- and pilot-scale bioreactors to optimize microbial strains.

You will mentor junior scientists, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and build robust processes with statistical tools for technology transfer to manufacturing. Travel to sites will be required.

Qualifications

• Expertise culturing microorganisms, including filamentous fungi, to increase metabolite productivity using aseptic techniques.
• Hands-on experience with lab-scale or pilot-scale SIP bioreactor systems for microbial cultivations.
• Experience training junior scientists in fermentation equipment and process development.
• Strong communication and ability to work in cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead upstream process development and fermentation science to optimize strain performance.
• Design and execute lab- and pilot-scale experiments with robust data analysis.
• Mentor junior scientists and train safe use of fermentation equipment.
• Collaborate with downstream, formulations, analytics, and IT to ensure knowledge transfer.
• Travel to manufacturing sites to launch new processes and troubleshoot.
