Job summary

Modal is seeking a strong technical lead to guide engineers building our serverless platform's machines layer. You'll own the fleet of bare metal and cloud hosts that power every Function, Sandbox, and training job, and the control plane that provisions, images, monitors, and repairs them.

You'll manage a team of 3–8 engineers while staying hands-on across the stack—including BMCs, firmware, PXE, Linux networking, drivers, and distributed control-plane services—and shape our long-term roadmap

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience writing high-quality production code.
• 3+ years of direct people management experience.
• Experience operating large fleets of physical hardware at scale or building control planes.
• Strong cloud skills.
• Strong knowledge of Linux kernel, drivers, networking, filesystems, and containers.
• Experience with hardware acceptance testing and benchmarking.
• Track record of setting technical direction and architectural decisions.
• Willingness to on-call and respond to production incidents.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineers designing and maintaining Modal's machines layer.
• Own full lifecycle of machines from hardware onboarding to remediation.
• Manage a team of 3–8 engineers while staying hands-on across the stack.
• Shape the long-term path for the stack beneath the platform.
