The salary range for this role is between $107,900 and $195,050, reflecting market factors and individual qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support delivery of substation protection and control design projects.
  • Create and refine relay one‑line diagrams that define protection zones and system topology.
  • Develop detailed AC schematics.
  • Produce DC control and protection schematics.
  • Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts.
  • Build accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria.
  • Perform rigorous QC checks on designs.
  • Provide technical guidance during installation and testing.
  • Interpret and implement utility‑specific standards.

Leidos is looking for a Lead Substation Protection & Controls Engineer to own complex P&C designs across 12–500 kV systems, applying advanced digital logic and AC/DC circuit expertise to engineer solutions that protect the modern grid and enable renewable integration.

Remote Option
  • Must be located in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, or Alabama.
  • Candidates must live further than 50 miles from the Atlanta, GA office.
  • Must be willing to travel 10%–20% of the time to customer sites and in‑office as needed.
Hybrid Work Schedule
  • 3 days in the Atlanta, GA office.
  • 2–3 days of in‑person connection to build relationships with colleagues and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Create and refine relay one‑line diagrams that define protection zones and system topology.
  • Develop detailed AC schematics that capture current, voltage, and protection device relationships.
  • Produce DC control and protection schematics that ensure safe and reliable operation of substation equipment.
  • Design control panels, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts that support efficient construction and long‑term maintainability.
  • Build accurate BOMs aligned with project criteria, equipment standards, and client requirements.
  • Perform rigorous QC checks on wiring and schematic designs to ensure accuracy, safety, and constructability.
  • Contribute from early scoping through final design, implementation, and energization support.
  • Provide technical guidance during installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Apply National Electrical Safety Code requirements to ensure safe and compliant designs.
  • Interpret and implement utility‑specific standards across all design deliverables.
  • Partner with design staff to produce complete, accurate drawing packages for every project.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field with 8+ years of substation protection and control design experience.
  • Experience leading and executing substation protection and control projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines in fast‑paced environments.
  • Team player with leadership capability.
  • Self‑starter, works with minimal supervision.

  • High computer competency with engineering tools and software.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and client locations.
You Might Also Have
  • Engineer Intern (EI) or Engineering in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Field testing or commissioning experience.
Pay Range

$107,900.00 – $195,050.00 (general guideline; actual compensation may vary based on experience, education, skills, and market data).
