Position Summary
The position falls within the Substation Department of the organization. The Lead Engineer will prepare and review advanced one-line diagrams, project scopes, and cost estimates for substation projects. They will conduct resource planning, oversight, and the assignment of tasks and projects to resources in coordination with other managers.
This is a remote position.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepare and review advanced one-line diagrams, project scopes, and cost estimates for substation projects
- Conduct resource planning, oversight, and the assignment of tasks and projects to resources in coordination with other managers.
- Engineer and design lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations
- Make necessary changes and corrections to drawings and documentation
- Verify the proper use of equipment and material according to project documentation standards and codes
- Verify that material and equipment are ordered and delivered on time for substation construction
- Travel to project sites for walk-downs and gathering information to develop the correct requirements for the projects to scope and develop substations
- Function as a project lead for substation projects
- Lead, facilitate, and coordinate work activities of others within the work group, team, department, or external parties to complete substation projects
- Provide training and guidance to lower-level employees
- Identify and initiate corrective actions when substation project objectives are not being met
- Interpret codes and regulations and develop standards for construction projects
- Promote engineering professionalism and standards
- Develop, recommend, and implement plans by establishing goals, objectives, and requirements, including scheduling, resources, cost, and quality management for complex engineering projects
- Position requires 20-25% travel (to company locations and client/job sites as needed)
Physical Aspects
- Review advanced substation construction drawings such as electrical arrangements, plan and section views, grounding, cable, and conduit drawings.
- Intermediate understanding in conducting studies such as lightning protection, grounding, and equipment replacement and repair for substations
Protection and Control
- Review substation construction drawings such as one-line diagrams, schematics, front views, and wiring diagrams.
- Intermediate understanding in conducting studies such as battery sizing, AC and DC station service sizing, voltage drop, CT saturation, etc.
Requirements
Education and Experience
- Must have a proven background of building client relationships.
- 8+ years of relevant work experience
- Experience assisting in operational functions (interviews, volunteering for career fairs, covering staff meetings, being part of committees, etc.)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
- Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field from an accredited institution will count toward years of experience
- A PE and/or P.Eng License is required
Skills and Abilities
- Advanced ability to perform design calculations such as battery sizing, AC/DC loads, system component selection, power transformers, circuit breakers, protection, control, and power cable ratings, bus bars, insulators, ground grid design, and lightning protection
- Advanced knowledge of standards and codes such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC
- Advanced (SME) understanding of equipment, material ordering, and bills of material for substation construction
- Strong experience in communication with clients and project stakeholders
- Advanced understanding in creating materials for the development of other designers
- Strong leadership skills in design team management
- Experience mentoring others
- Basic understanding of operational business concepts (estimation, labor charging, basic finance, client development, quality assurance, company SOPs)
- Excellent listening skills and follow-through on commitments
Benefits
Salary: $140k-$160k (depending on experience)
Overtime paid over 40 hours/week
Up to $8,000 annual bonus potential
