Job description

Lead Substation Engineer – Gas & Process EPC

Houston, TX | Office-based | Occasional project travel

Amica Talent is supporting an established EPC contractor in the search for a Houston-based Lead Substation Engineer.

This is a senior, hands‑on technical position supporting complex gas processing, downstream and process infrastructure projects across the US. As an early hire within a developing substation capability, you’ll take ownership of the complete HV/EHV engineering package while helping establish the technical standards and processes that support the team’s future growth.

You’ll lead both Substation Physical and Protection & Control engineering, working closely with project management, procurement, construction and commissioning teams throughout the full project lifecycle.

This isn’t a narrowly focused design position. The successful engineer will influence major technical decisions, remain closely involved with field execution and ensure the substation scope is reliable, commercially considered, practical to construct and fully prepared for energization.

The Role
  • Lead the engineering delivery of HV/EHV substation packages across major EPC projects
  • Provide hands‑on technical direction across Substation Physical and Protection & Control engineering
  • Oversee equipment layouts, grounding design, elevations and other physical design deliverables
  • Guide relay design, protection coordination, control schemes and settings development
  • Lead or review load‑flow, short‑circuit, arc‑flash and interconnection studies
  • Develop and review specifications for transformers, breakers and other high‑voltage equipment
  • Evaluate equipment and design options based on project requirements, schedule, cost and site constraints
  • Coordinate engineering activities with project management, procurement, construction and commissioning teams
  • Work directly with clients, utilities, vendors and multidisciplinary engineering groups
  • Ensure deliverables meet applicable IEEE, NESC, NEC and project‑specific standards
  • Lead technical reviews, quality‑control activities and engineering risk assessments
  • Provide technical support throughout construction, testing, commissioning and energization
  • Mentor engineers and designers while contributing to the development of internal engineering practices
  • Serve as Engineer of Record when required
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience
  • Active Professional Engineer license
  • Strong HV/EHV substation engineering experience within an EPC, utility or engineering consultancy environment
  • Technical expertise across both Substation Physical and Protection & Control
  • Experience leading complete engineering packages through design, construction and commissioning
  • Strong understanding of power‑system studies, protection principles and high‑voltage equipment
  • A practical, hands‑on approach with a strong understanding of constructability and field execution
  • Ability to make commercially informed engineering decisions within a lump‑sum EPC environment
  • Confidence working directly with clients, utilities, vendors and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Based in Houston or willing to relocate
  • Willing and able to work from the company’s Houston office five days per week
Experience That Will Stand Out
  • Lump‑sum EPC or LSTK project experience
  • Gas processing, petrochemical, refining or other process‑facility experience
  • Experience integrating HV substations into large industrial facilities
  • Hands‑on construction, testing and commissioning involvement
  • ETAP, SKM, PSCAD or similar power‑system analysis experience
  • Previous Engineer of Record responsibility
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, systems or processes
  • A strong track record of mentoring and technically developing engineers

This is an excellent opportunity to join an established EPC contractor at the ground floor of a developing substation capability. You’ll have immediate technical ownership, direct involvement in project execution and the opportunity to help shape and grow the wider engineering team.

A competitive compensation package, comprehensive benefits and long‑term career development opportunities are available.
