Job Description

WSP is currently looking for an experienced Senior Structural Engineer – Bridges to join our Northern New England Transportation Group located in the Merrimack, NH or Eliot, ME offices. This role involves providing technical design for both small and large‑scale bridge projects.

Your Impact
  • Senior level position to perform professional structural engineering analysis and design of transportation structures such as bridges and retaining walls.
  • Apply high‑level structural techniques for concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, and construction; work as part of a team to design and check bridge superstructure and substructures; develop preliminary and final plans, specifications, quantities, and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients; provide design plans ensuring data integrity and compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations explaining research, concepts, and recommendations to address structural, design, and/or construction issues.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small‑to‑medium‑sized projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded improvement projects and business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making about company resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 7+ years of post‑education experience in engineering, with prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer, preferably in NH, VT, Maine or ability to obtain PE.
  • Proficient knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, and design/build processes.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations, interpret plans and specifications, and apply regulations.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • High level of self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Works independently with minimal oversight, providing guidance and leadership to junior team members while maintaining QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (MicroStation, OpenBridge, MDX, STADD, etc.), spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply knowledge and reach logical, economical solutions.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience with NHDOT, MaineDOT, and/or VTrans Bridge design and familiarity with respective manuals and standards.
  • Active membership in local professional practice organizations.
