Lead Structural Engineer – US Mining & Metal, Process & Infrastructure Design

WSP is hiring a Lead Structural Engineer for the US Mining & Metal, Process & Infrastructure Design team. The position reports to the Structural Service Line Lead and is available in Tempe, AZ; South Jordan, UT; or Tucson, AZ based on candidate preference. This role provides high-level technical assistance and guidance for water/wastewater infrastructure, water treatment, heavy industry, mining, and power projects. Responsibilities include overseeing structural design for complex industrial projects, mentoring junior engineers, managing structural engineers and designers, and advising clients and project teams as subject matter experts.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply high-level structural and civil engineering techniques to identify improvements for various infrastructure project phases.
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, transportation channels, and operations to determine conformance with applicable rules and standards.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates; prepare safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
  • Manage design, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of building and infrastructure projects from inception to completion, ensuring durability and structural soundness.
  • Incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, and modeling techniques to meet safety and functionality goals.
  • Oversee cross‑functional teams of engineers, architects, planners, and scientists on multiple projects, handling budgets, tracking hours, and compliance documentation.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve building and infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and code compliance.
  • Prepare data visualizations and technical reports to communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Analyze site investigation data and develop action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
  • Collaborate with engineers and authorities on federal, state, regional, and local projects and business development opportunities.
  • Remain current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of post‑education experience in engineering with prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Engineer license required.
  • Proficiency in structural engineering principles, design/build processes, and application to project work.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
  • Knowledge of sustainability processes and reducing hazardous substances / greenhouse gas.
  • Strong understanding of structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and engineering calculations with accurate analysis.
  • Skill in planning inspections and investigations of building, facility, or structural design, applying applicable regulations.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • High level of self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
  • Independent work with minimal oversight while guiding junior team members and adhering to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, design software (MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS), mathematical and statistical analysis, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to reach logical solutions from data.
  • Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors and ensuring safe, efficient task completion.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired.
