Job summary

Job description

Lead Structural Engineer — US Mining & Metal, Process & Infrastructure Design Team

WSP is hiring a Lead Structural Engineer who will report to the Structural Service Line Lead for the Process & Infrastructure Design team. The position can be based in Tempe, AZ; South Jordan, UT; or Tucson, AZ, depending on candidate preference.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high‑level technical assistance and guidance for water/wastewater infrastructure, water treatment, heavy industry, mining, and power projects.
  • Oversee structural design for complex industrial projects, mentor junior engineers, manage structural engineers and designers, and advise clients and project teams as a subject‑matter expert.
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical work site, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Apply high‑level structural and civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements across infrastructure project phases (concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation).
  • Perform professional structural engineering work and conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, buildings, infrastructure, transportation channels, and operations to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Develop construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans; update infrastructure layout plans requiring coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Manage design, construction, rehabilitation, and remediation of building and infrastructure projects from inception to completion, ensuring durability and structural soundness.
  • Incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to deliver safe and functional end‑user solutions.
  • Oversee cross‑functional teams of engineers, architects, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid‑level and/or multiple concurrent projects, managing budgets, hours, expenses, technical calculations, permits, compliance documentation, and regulatory analysis.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve building and infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Prepare data and visualizations (tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross‑sections, 2D/3D illustrations) for complex data interpretation and presentations.
  • Develop comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address structural, environmental, design, and/or construction issues or opportunities.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret site investigation data, formulate action plans for moderate‑to‑high‑level risk mitigation activities.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded projects, as well as proposal and business development opportunities.
  • Stay current with the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of post‑education experience in engineering and prior structural or civil design experience.
  • Active engineer licence required.
  • Proficiency in structural engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and application to project‑related issues.
  • Knowledge and experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management; active involvement in varied rehabilitation, new design, and construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability processes, reducing or eliminating hazardous substances and greenhouse gas.
  • Specific knowledge of relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations with engineering principles, interpret plans and specifications, and compare to regulations.
  • Capability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on various aspects of construction and design of buildings, facilities or structures.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to express ideas to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Excellent self‑leadership, attention to detail, multitasking and prioritization in a dynamic workplace.
  • Independent work with minimal oversight while guiding junior team members and adhering to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS), and related math and software tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze testing results, data, statistics, and provide logical solutions.
  • Effectively coordinate and direct subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Track record of upholding workplace safety and complying with WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required, depending on project demands.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • 40‑Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.
