Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or systems engineering environments.
• 4+ years as a Software System Safety Engineer for safety-critical systems.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent (military senior NCO acceptable).
• Experience with safety standards, hazard analysis, and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

• Lead software system safety analyses through the full software development lifecycle.
• Conduct software hazard analyses, risk assessments and safety testing activities.
• Develop, document, track, and resolve software safety anomalies and corrective actions.
• Execute Software Level of Rigor (LOR) activities per program requirements.
• Review architectures, designs, and code to identify hazards and risks.
• Perform code-level hazard analyses for C++/C# software and conduct peer reviews.

Description

Position: Lead Software System Safety Engineer

Location: Dahlgren, VA

We are seeking an experienced Lead Software System Safety Engineer to support the development, analysis, and verification of safety-critical software systems. This role requires expertise in software system safety, hazard analysis, risk assessment, and software development processes within complex engineering environments. The position offers a hybrid work arrangement with a combination of on‑site and remote work.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and perform system safety and software safety analyses throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Conduct software hazard analyses, risk assessments, and software safety testing activities.
• Develop, document, track, and resolve software safety anomalies and related corrective actions.
• Execute and support Software Level of Rigor (LOR) activities in accordance with program requirements.
• Review software architectures, designs, and source code to identify potential hazards and safety risks.
• Conduct peer reviews and perform code‑level hazard analyses for software developed in languages such as C++ and C#.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including:
• Safety Assessment Reports (SARs)
• Software‑Centric Safety Assessment Reports
• Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA)
• System Requirements Hazard Analyses (SRHA)
• Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams to ensure safety requirements are properly defined, implemented, and verified.
• Develop and deliver technical presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
• Support safety reviews, technical review boards, and system certification activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

• One of the following is required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Business, or a related technical discipline, OR Equivalent military operational experience at a senior non‑commissioned officer level.

Experience

• 8+ years of professional experience in software engineering, software development, systems engineering, modeling, or simulation environments.
• 4+ years of experience as a Software System Safety Engineer supporting safety‑critical systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience performing software safety analyses and safety verification activities for complex systems.
• Strong understanding of system safety standards, methodologies, and best practices.
• Experience conducting code reviews and hazard analyses for C++ and C# applications.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain safety documentation and technical reports.
• Experience supporting safety review boards, technical review panels, or regulatory compliance activities.
• Excellent technical writing, presentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
