Functional System Safety Engineer
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Employment Type: Contract
Pay Range: $74-$82/hour
What You Will Do
- Evaluate customer System Safety requirements and determine vehicle compliance.
- Support the development of system and software architectures.
- Conduct System Safety analyses and provide recommendations for design solutions and design changes.
- Document safety analyses and results in clear technical reports.
- Support the Systems Engineering Department in developing the System Specification Document.
- Define, connect, trace, and validate safety requirements.
- Create and maintain Hazard Tracking Systems (HTS), Preliminary Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA) as required.
- Determine compliance with contractual requirements and System Specification Documents.
- Develop and complete safety Contract Data Requirements Lists (CDRLs) for customer submission.
- Manage end-to-end traceability of hazard mitigations for assigned systems.
- Create and manage Human/System Interface Databases, Hazard Logs, Risk Registers, and other hazard-tracking activities.
- Work with hardware and software engineers to identify safety hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
- Conduct peer reviews of System Safety work products prior to release.
- Support safety validation activities throughout the product development lifecycle.
What You Bring to the Table
- Bachelor’s degree in a System Safety-related discipline such as Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or another engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of applicable experience;fewer years may be considered with an advanced degree.
- Experience developing safety hazard analyses, safety concepts, safety cases, and hazard mitigation strategies.
- Experience developing safety requirements traceability and test cases for safety-critical items.
- Familiarity with applicable System Safety standards and methodologies, including MIL-STD-882E, Joint Software Systems Safety Engineering Handbook, ISO 26262, or ARP-4761A.
- Experience developing safety requirements using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and system V-model decomposition methodologies.
- Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler or similar Model-Based Systems Engineering tools.
- Experience with Teamcenter, Jira, Confluence, DOORS, or similar requirements management tools.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication, organization, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to collaborate with hardware and software engineers to identify safety hazards and mitigation strategies.
What Sets You Apart
- Master’s degree in a System Safety-related discipline such as Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or another engineering discipline.
- Experience with system, logical, and physical architecture in developing safety strategies and mitigations.
- Defense industry experience.
- Automotive or aerospace System Safety experience, including safety processes, execution, and launching designs into production.
- Experience with high-voltage systems and autonomous embedded software.
- Experience with Human Factors, Ergonomics, and System Safety in product design.
- Familiarity with User-Centered Design philosophies and approaches.
- Understanding of Functional Failure Analysis.
- Experience with product development cycles, Agile methodologies, and Systems Engineering V-model processes.
Clearance Requirements
- This position requires eligibility to obtain a U.S. Security clearance.
- Non-U.S. Citizens are not eligible.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to meet Anthropometric Size Requirements for confined-space access.
- Must be able to work occasional evening and/or weekend overtime as required.
