Progressive Leasing is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to drive hands-on development across a multi-service backend (C#/.NET and Java/Spring Boot) deployed on Kubernetes (AWS EKS). You will write production code daily, mentor engineers, and champion AI-assisted tooling to automate and accelerate delivery.

You will collaborate across teams, shape architectural decisions, and ensure alignment with lease-to-own business needs while improving developer experience and velocity.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software engineering with hands-on coding daily.
• Strong depth in at least one of C#/.NET or Java/Spring.
• Proven experience with AI coding tools and automation.
• Experience deploying cloud-native apps on AWS EKS/Kubernetes.

This role is a work from home position and can be performed remotely anywhere in the continental US or at our corporate location in Utah.

YOU ARE:

A hands‑on tech lead who codes daily and lives and breathes AI‑assisted development — you use AI coding tools as your default way of writing, reviewing, and shipping code, and you're always looking for the next piece of engineering toil to automate away with them. This is not an architecture‑only or purely advisory role: you're expected to be in the codebase regularly, shipping production work alongside the team you lead. You take the time to understand our lease‑to‑own business — not just the tech stack — so the systems you build and the decisions you make serve how the business operates. Your passion for developer experience, mentoring, and coaching will improve the daily working lives of our colleagues, increase velocity, and deliver quality software to our partners and consumers.

Your Day-to-day

• Write and ship production code regularly - this is a hands‑on engineering role, not a purely architectural one
• Own technical decisions across a multi-service backend platform (C#/.NET and Java/Spring Boot), deployed on Kubernetes (AWS EKS)
• Use AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Copilot, or similar) as a daily working tool to write, review, and ship code faster and with higher quality - not as an occasional experiment
• Build and champion internal AI-driven tooling and automation - for testing, deployment validation, code review, or developer workflows - that removes manual toil for the whole team
• Design and drive cross-service initiatives - architecture changes, shared libraries, migrations - spanning multiple codebases and languages
• Learn and stay current on how our lease‑to‑own business actually works - leasing terms, payments, tax handling, customer lifecycle - so technical tradeoffs reflect real business impact, not just engineering elegance
• Collaborate and participate in developing solutions together in cross-discipline teams
• Actively participate in code reviews, leveraging them to enforce best practices, software craftsmanship, and effective use of AI tooling across the team
• Every engineer plays a part in the development and evolution of our technology roadmap - contribute to evaluations as we select new software, tools, and AI capabilities to deploy in our environments
• Participate in production support: deployments, incident response, and root-causes analysis
• Demonstrate a high sense of ownership and accountability for work produced

You’ll Bring

• 8+ years' experience in a software engineering function, still hands‑on and writing code day to day
• Real depth in at least one of C#/.NET or Java/Spring, with enough range to be productive in both
• Daily, hands‑on fluency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) - built real habits around them, not just tried them once
• Experience building internal tooling or automation that measurably reduces manual engineering work
• Genuine curiosity about the business behind the code - willingness to learn how lease‑to‑own, payments, and tax logic work so you can make better engineering calls, not just take tickets at face value
• Creative problem solving and critical thinking skills
• A passion for enriching the day‑to‑day developer experience
• Track record operating across multiple services/repos rather than staying in one lane
• Experience with cloud‑native deployment (AWS EKS/Kubernetes) and modern CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, GitOps/ArgoCD)
• A desire to work cross-team, cross-stack
• Strong fundamentals: async I/O patterns, resilience (retries/circuit breakers), API design, and financial/decimal-precision correctness where money is involved
• Experience mentoring engineers and driving technical decisions without needing heavy direction
