Job description

Thazen is seeking an experienced Software Engineer Lead to provide technical leadership, software architecture expertise, and hands‑on engineering support for complex software and simulation systems. This role is responsible for the architecture, design and implementation within an overall software solution.

The Software Engineer Lead will provide technical direction and day-to-day leadership to teams of Software Engineers responsible for developing and modifying assigned project work. The position combines hands‑on software engineering with technical decision-making, team leadership, design and code oversight, and responsibility for meeting established cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive software development experience, strong knowledge of modern software architectures and engineering methodologies, and the ability to lead engineering teams in the development and integration of complex systems. Experience with modeling and simulation, flight simulation, AR/VR/XR, mixed reality, and distributed simulation environments is highly desired.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Lead the overall design, implementation, integration, and modification of one or more code branches within a larger software solution.
  • Provide technical leadership for engineering teams consisting of approximately 2-10 Software Engineers.
  • Make technical decisions regarding software architecture, design, implementation approaches, interfaces, and development methodologies.
  • Assign technical tasks to team members, monitor progress, and proactively address issues that could affect schedule, cost, or technical performance.
  • Lead software design reviews and code reviews, moderate technical disagreements, and ensure review comments and identified issues are appropriately dispositioned.
  • Ensure established engineering standards, policies, processes, and procedures are consistently followed throughout the software development lifecycle.
  • Provide project status, technical progress, and updated Estimates to the Project Manager throughout program execution.
  • Train and integrate new engineering team members while supporting the continued technical development of existing team members.
  • Provide coaching and counseling to team members and recommend corrective actions to the Project Manager when necessary.
  • Support proposal and capture efforts by developing technical solution designs, engineering approaches, and associated estimates.
  • Design and develop new software components, applications, and systems while making targeted modifications and enhancements to existing software applications.
  • Translate customer and system requirements into effective software solutions using established engineering and industry-standard development methodologies.
  • Define engineering work using both documented requirements and industry-standard software development practices.
  • Develop software within Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Apply expert knowledge of applicable programming languages, software architectures, and both procedural and object-oriented development methodologies.
  • Perform unit testing of developed software and ensure adherence to applicable coding and engineering standards.
  • Leverage approved internal reusable components and Free and Open Source Software where appropriate to reduce development cost and improve engineering productivity.
  • Maintain schedules associated with assigned engineering tasks, including task status and projected completion dates.
  • Implement and apply sound Configuration Management (CM) processes and adhere to established software configuration management and development policies and procedures.
  • Work within established program cost and schedule targets defined during the program design and planning phases.
  • Establish, conduct, and document software testing based on customer requirements.
  • Contribute to the overall architecture, design, development, integration, and maintenance of software products and applications.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project leadership to successfully integrate software within complex systems and simulation environments.
  • Travel domestically and/or internationally when required to support program and customer needs.
  • Support extended work hours or modified work schedules when necessary to meet critical program milestones or special project requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
