Job description

Description

Emory University's National Biomedical Research Center (ENBRC) is looking for a Lead Software Engineer to lead a small software development team responsible for designing, developing, modernizing, and supporting custom applications that support biomedical research, animal resource management, and business operations across the center. This individual will serve as both a technical leader and hands‑on developer, managing a team of three software engineers while collaborating directly with researchers, veterinarians, administrators, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver scalable software solutions. The Lead Software Engineer will oversee the full software development lifecycle, including architecture, development, testing, deployment, code reviews, and ongoing application support. Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (Master's preferred), 5+ years of software development experience, and at least 2 years of leadership or people management experience. Strong experience with Node.js, JavaScript, Vue.js or React.js, GraphQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and full-stack web application development is required. Candidates should also have experience translating business requirements into technical solutions, mentoring developers, and supporting enterprise applications. The role will support the organization's primary Animal Resource Management System (ARMS), a custom-built platform that manages veterinary, research, and operational data, as well as additional business applications focused on workflow automation, reporting, and process improvement. The selected candidate will also help drive modernization efforts involving the migration of legacy .NET applications into a modern Node.js-based architecture. Preferred experience includes AWS, Nuxt.js, MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle Analytics Server (OAS), CI/CD practices, process automation initiatives, and supporting applications within healthcare, research, higher education, or nonprofit environments. Candidates should possess excellent communication, problem-solving, organizational, and stakeholder management skills and be comfortable working in a collaborative environment where flexibility and adaptability are essential. This is a direct‑hire opportunity based in Atlanta, GA. While the position offers a hybrid work arrangement, candidates must be able to regularly attend meetings on‑site and work closely with stakeholders. Permanent U.S. work authorization is required, as visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
