Job summary

Heartland Animal Shelter in Chicagoland is actively seeking an experienced Shelter Veterinarian to lead our medical team in HQHV shelter medicine and high-quality surgery. You will oversee all veterinary operations, supervise staff, and collaborate with departments to coordinate care for shelter and foster animals.

The role requires a DVM, IL licensing (or willingness to obtain), and a DEA license within 30 days.

Qualifications

DVM degree and IL license (or willingness to obtain IL license ASAP).
Solid shelter medicine principles understanding.
DEA license within 30 days of employment.
Passion for animal welfare and community impact.
Willingness to learn new techniques to meet shelter needs.
Able to perform at least 20 spay/neuter surgeries per day (including pediatric).

Responsibilities

Lead HQHV shelter medicine and surgery.
Examinations and treatment of shelter animals.
Manage a varied caseload and perform non-spay/neuter surgeries.
Develop, implement and monitor veterinary programs to maintain high care standards.
Stay up to date on shelter medicine best practices and HQHV procedures.
Train staff to perform euthanasia procedures and maintain SOPs.
Coordinate with departments on animal care pathways and infectious disease control.
Assist with grant and funding applications related to vet services.
