Overview

The Lead Mold Maker and Casting Specialist is an experienced, highly skilled artist recognized for their mastery in mold-making and casting techniques, with a strong ability to guide projects and maintain high-quality standards across all outputs. This role is essential in producing durable, detailed molds and castings that meet both the creative and technical specifications required in film production. Leveraging a vast range of mold-making techniques and materials, the Lead Mold Maker ensures precision and problem-solving excellence on every project. This role collaborates closely with other departments and takes a proactive approach to supporting production goals while mentoring junior members of the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mold Creation and Oversight: Design and produce molds of various types—including fiberglass, stone, open-face, press, and complex multi-part matrix molds—to meet the unique requirements of each project
  • Master Modification: Fine-tune mold masters with precision, ensuring alignment, stability, and quality for casting purposes
  • Material Application and Reinforcement: Adapt materials and reinforcement techniques to achieve stable, long-lasting molds and castings, maintaining high standards across production
  • Alignment and Keying: Apply advanced keying techniques and align armatures within molds to achieve accurate and reliable results
  • Seaming and Repair: Seam and repair castings, achieving seamless finishes ready for production, with an emphasis on durability and aesthetic quality
  • Painting and Color Matching: Employ painting techniques and color-matching expertise to ensure cast materials align with aesthetic project requirements
  • Leadership and Problem Solving: Lead in addressing mold-making and casting challenges, proposing innovative, effective solutions to uphold quality and streamline workflows
  • Team Collaboration and Mentorship: Work closely with cross-functional teams, mentor junior mold makers and casting artists, and foster a collaborative, supportive environment
  • Workspace Maintenance: Ensure a clean, organized workspace that meets safety standards and promotes efficient production
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work extended hours as needed to meet production demands

Qualifications

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in mold making and casting, with a focus on film production; a portfolio demonstrating a range of skills and high-quality work
  • Material Expertise: Proficient with materials such as GI 1000, Platinum and Tin silicone, fiberglass, plaster, alginate, polyfoam, cold foam, foam latex, and other casting materials
  • Mold-Making Techniques: Advanced knowledge in creating and modifying various mold types, with expertise in keying techniques and aligning armatures within molds
  • Seaming and Finishing Skills: Skilled in seaming, repairing, painting, and color matching of cast parts to achieve seamless, production-ready finishes
  • Prosthetic Fabrication: Background in prosthetics fabrication is advantageous, offering additional versatility for production needs
  • Product Knowledge: Expertise in using products from Smooth-On and Monster for mold making and casting applications
  • Adaptability to Climate: Familiarity with mold-making under various climate conditions, including warmer and humid environments
