Job summary

Axiom is seeking a Scientific Applications Programmer/Physical Scientist to advance the Unified Forecast System (UFS) Weather Model and in-core data assimilation. You will join a team of software engineers and scientists to implement state management, rewind functionality, and robust regression testing.

Responsibilities include extending coupling with NUOPC/ESMF, enabling JEDI builds, and integrating AI-assisted coding practices within a modern DevOps workflow.

Qualifications

• Background in computer science, software engineering, meteorology/NWP, applied mathematics or related field with numerical modeling experience.
• Proficiency in Linux environment, shell scripting, and automation.
• Experience with Git, CI, testing and documentation practices.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted code development is a plus.
• Experience with HPC platforms, MPI, and job schedulers (SLURM, PBS).
• Strong English communication and collaboration across teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead development of new UFS Weather Model infrastructure features like in-core data assimilation and high-resolution nests.
• Extend coupling support and automate regression testing for stability.
• Work with DA teams to enable UFS and JEDI builds with in-core DA.
• Incorporate incremental analysis updates (IAU) after rewind steps.
• Apply modern software practices: Git, CI, unit tests, and Agile/DevOps.
• Debug complex model infrastructure issues and document solutions.
