Job summary

School Board of Highlands County Transportation in Sebring, Florida is seeking a Mechanic 5 - Transportation to inspect, maintain, and repair school buses and related vehicles. The role requires lead inspection duties, training responsibilities for new mechanics, and planning daily maintenance work in coordination with the Garage Manager.

The candidate must have a high school diploma or trade certification, at least five years of relevant experience, and a Florida CDL or plan to obtain one

Qualifications

• High school diploma or trade certificate
• Five years documented experience in the trade
• Valid Florida CDL or agrees to obtain within 90 days
• Physical ability to perform strenuous tasks (lifting up to 100 pounds)
• Criminal history and drug screening clearance

Responsibilities

• Performs school bus safety inspections; serves as lead inspector for inspection and repair.
• Obtains Inspector and Trainer certifications from Florida DOE to train new mechanics.
• Prepares inspection reports and conducts preventive maintenance and repairs.
• Grades work orders and prioritizes repairs; plans daily work routine.
• Performs repairs listed on work orders and ensures roadworthiness of vehicles.
• Operates standard automotive tools and diagnostic equipment for assigned tasks.
