Job summary

The Washington State Department of Ecology is hiring two Regional Shoreline Compliance/Enforcement Specialists (Environmental Specialist 4) in the Shorelands & Environmental Assistance program. This is a temporary position ending June 30, 2027, with potential extension based on funding.

Telework is eligible with in-office presence every two weeks. You will lead enforcement, audit SMPs, assist with regional implementation, collaborate with local governments, and strengthen state-local

Qualifications

• Nine (9) years of experience related to the duties of the position.
• Ability to interpret shoreline authorizations and SMPs for consistency.
• Experience preparing enforcement documents and coordinating with legal partners.

Responsibilities

• Implement regional SMP audit and technical assistance, evaluate shoreline permits and mitigation obligations.
• Provide compliance support to local governments, develop monitoring processes.
• Conduct field verification of priority shoreline projects and document ecological outcomes.
• Lead enforcement activities: identify violations, prepare notices, coordinate with SEA and AG’s Office.
• Represent Ecology in enforcement hearings and complex proceedings.
• Serve as project officer for grants and agreements, tracking deliverables.
• Collaborate with planners, headquarters, and partners to ensure statewide SMP compliance.
