Job summary

EQ3 is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to own the balance-of-plant design for modular power packages. You will drive design from basis to P&IDs, through procurement, fabrication, and first fire tests at our Carson City facility.

Qualifications

• Degree in Chemical Engineering or closely related field.
• 8+ years in process design.
• Lead process engineer on a greenfield unit through design to commissioning.
• Fluent in heat and mass balances, fluid flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
• Proficient in Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, or equivalent.
• Experience with P&ID authoring in AutoCAD Plant 3D.
• Led HAZOPs and design for process safety.

Responsibilities

• Own the complete balance-of-plant design package from design basis through P&IDs and procurement.
• Carry it through fabrication, first fire, and performance testing at our test facility outside Carson City.
• Standardize it so every package after the first deploys faster, cheaper, and more reliably.

Job description

US electricity demand is growing again for the first time in two decades, and lead times for new

generating equipment now stretch to years. They build and deploys modular power packages at

scale, now.

We are a small, early-stage team. You will influence every major technical decision and see

your work running on real hardware within months, not years.

The Role

You will own the balance of plant for our power packages: everything that has to work for the

package to turn fuel into electrons safely and reliably. Fuel gas conditioning and delivery, lube

oil, cooling and heat rejection, compressed air, exhaust and emissions control, water treatment,

drains and vents, and the process requirements for the instrumentation and controls that tie

them together.

This is a design role first: roughly 60% process design and engineering documentation, 25%

vendor packages, and 15% in the field seeing your systems built and run. You will own the

process discipline. We care most about first-principles thinking, discipline around process

safety, and how fast you move from a P&ID to a working plant.

What You'll Work On

Process Design and Documentation

• Translate package and site requirements into functional requirements for each system,
• and define its process, mechanical, electrical, and controls interfaces with the rest of the
• package
• Size and select equipment from first principles: bound the problem with order-of-
• magnitude estimates, then close the design with heat and mass balances, hydraulics,
• Design the fuel gas conditioning and delivery system: filtration and coalescing, pressure
• regulation, dew-point and superheat control, heating, and compression where site
• pressure requires it, against fuel composition and Wobbe Index limits
• Design the emissions control train (SCR, oxidation catalyst) and the water treatment and
• reagent handling systems behind it
• Own the design basis, PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, line lists, and
• equipment and instrument datasheets, with revision control from concept to as-built
• Write equipment and package specifications that vendors can bid and build to without
• Own the process intent of the control system: control narratives, cause-and-effect
• matrices, safety instrumented function definitions, and start-up and shutdown
• sequences. Our controls partner implements what you define.

Process Safety

• Lead HAZID, HAZOP, and LOPA reviews and drive actions to closure
• Design relief, venting, gas detection, isolation, and safe shutdown systems
• Apply ASME B31.3 and Section VIII, API 614, NFPA 37, and IEC 61511 / ISA 84, and
• know when and how they bind the design
• Set the safety culture on a small team: we move fast, and the process side is where we
• cannot get it wrong

Vendor and Package Management

• Run RFQs, evaluate technical bids, and negotiate scope splits for skids, heat
• exchangers, compressors, filtration, valves, instruments, and packaged systems
• Review vendor drawings, attend factory acceptance tests, and hold vendors to spec and
• Develop commissioning plans, test procedures, and acceptance criteria for the systems
• Support first fire and performance testing, troubleshoot in the field, run root cause, and
• feed lessons back into the design

You Might Be a Great Fit If...

• A degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, and 8+ years in process
• design
• You have been the lead process engineer on at least one greenfield unit or facility, from
• design basis through P&IDs, specifications, procurement, and commissioning. Chemical,
• petrochemical, refining, LNG and gas processing, EPC, and power generation
• backgrounds all fit.
• Fluent in heat and mass balances, fluid flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamics, and
• proficient in Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, or equivalent, a hydraulics tool such as AFT
• Fathom, and P&ID authoring in AutoCAD Plant 3D or similar
• You have led HAZOPs and design for process safety rather than just documenting it
• You have managed vendors and packaged equipment and know how to get what you
• specified, on time
• You write clearly and produce documentation that other people can build and operate
• from
