Job summary

Schattdecor is seeking a First Press Operator to set up, operate, and maintain Rotogravure presses, ensuring quality and efficiency. You will monitor environmental factors, adjust ink distribution, and perform job setups including plate mounting and ink mixing.

The role requires attention to detail, leadership, and the ability to work independently or in a team, with experience in printing machinery and quality control in a manufacturing setting.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3+ years in Offset, Flexo, Rotogravure or similar printing machinery in manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with color management techniques for print accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Experience with quality control procedures in production.
  • Basic understanding of machining or machining processes advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate Rotogravure presses to meet specifications and quality standards.
  • Monitor humidity/temperature and adjust equipment as needed.
  • Adjust ink distribution, speed, and drying parameters to ensure print quality.
  • Mount plates, mix ink, and load materials for jobs.
  • Perform quality checks for color accuracy and registration throughout runs.
  • Maintain accurate job tickets and material usage records.
  • Uphold safety standards and proper manufacturing protocols.
  • Direct and mentor press operators; communicate issues promptly to maintain workflow.
  • Prepare equipment for upcoming jobs and assist with cleaning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The First Press Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining printing press equipment to meet Schattdecor's quality, productivity, and safety standards. This role ensures accurate press setup, monitors production quality throughout runs, performs basic equipment troubleshooting and repairs, and minimizes waste while maximizing efficiency.

The First Press Operator leads and mentors Press Crew members, by assigning work, providing training, establishing priorities, and monitoring performance. The position works closely with Shift Leaders and other shifts to maintain production continuity and achieve customer quality expectations.

This role requires strong attention to detail, visual acuity, hand-eye coordination, reliability, and leadership skills. Working conditions include prolonged standing and regular exposure to industrial chemicals and solvents.

Essential Functions:
  • Operate and monitor Rotogravure presses to produce high-quality printed materials according to specifications;
  • Monitor environmental factors, such as humidity and temperature that may impact equipment performance and make necessary adjustments;
  • Make adjustments to manage ink distribution, speed, and temperature in the drying chamber;
  • Set up press equipment, including adjusting color registration, ink viscosity, and print parameters;
  • Perform job setups, including plate mounting, ink mixing, and material loading;
  • Perform quality control checks throughout the printing process to ensure color accuracy, registration, and overall print quality;
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including job tickets, quality checks, and material usage;
  • Maintain safety standards by adhering to manufacturing protocols;
  • Direct and monitor press operators;
  • Document production details and communicate any issues promptly to ensure smooth workflow;
  • Assist in cleaning and preparing equipment for upcoming jobs to ensure optimal performance;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • High School diploma or equivalent;
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in Offset printing, Flexo presses, Rotary Die Cut, Rotogravure printing or similar printing machinery within a manufacturing environment;
  • Familiarity with color management techniques for print accuracy;
  • Ability to work independently & in a team atmosphere;
  • Experience with quality control procedures in a production setting;
  • Basic understanding of machining or machining processes is advantageous;
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and stand for extended periods of time.
