Staff Platform Engineer

Position Summary

The Staff Platform Engineer provides technical leadership for the strategy, architecture, and evolution of enterprise platform engineering capabilities that enable secure, scalable, and efficient software delivery.

This role leads the design and adoption of platform products, shared services, self-service capabilities, intelligent automation, and cloud-native engineering ecosystems. The Staff Platform Engineer works across engineering, architecture, security, product, and technology leadership to establish enterprise standards, modernize engineering practices, improve developer experience, and accelerate adoption of AI-enabled development.

The ideal candidate combines deep expertise in platform engineering and cloud-native technologies with strong strategic leadership and the ability to influence technical direction across multiple engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Engineering & Architecture

  • Define the enterprise strategy, architecture, and roadmap for platform engineering capabilities.
  • Lead the design and evolution of scalable platform products, shared services, APIs, SDKs, frameworks, and reusable engineering capabilities.
  • Establish platform standards, reference architectures, and engineering patterns.
  • Drive cloud-native modernization and adoption of modern software engineering practices.
  • Align platform investments with business objectives, engineering priorities, and developer productivity goals.

AI & Intelligent Engineering

  • Define strategies for incorporating AI and intelligent automation into the software development lifecycle.
  • Lead the adoption of AI-powered engineering capabilities, intelligent automation, AI agents, and agentic workflows.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and provide recommendations for enterprise adoption.
  • Establish scalable patterns and governance for LLM, RAG, MCP, agent orchestration, and other AI technologies.
  • Partner with engineering and architecture leaders to identify opportunities to automate and improve software delivery.

Developer Experience & Self-Service

  • Define and advance the enterprise developer experience strategy.
  • Build and promote self-service platforms that improve developer speed, consistency, and autonomy.
  • Establish standards and capabilities supporting development, testing, deployment, onboarding, and ongoing support.
  • Champion reusable templates, accelerators, and engineering tools that simplify software delivery.
  • Drive platform adoption through enablement, advocacy, and collaboration with engineering teams.

DevOps, Reliability & Operational Excellence

  • Establish strategies for CI/CD, infrastructure automation, observability, platform reliability, and cloud operations.
  • Advance Infrastructure as Code, automated deployments, monitoring, and operational intelligence.
  • Promote SRE practices that improve platform resilience, scalability, performance, and availability.
  • Leverage automation and AI to support anomaly detection, remediation, and operational workflows.
  • Use engineering and platform metrics to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

Security, Governance & Engineering Controls

  • Establish platform-wide security, governance, compliance, and risk management standards.
  • Embed secure-by-design principles and automated controls into platform capabilities.
  • Develop scalable guardrails and policy frameworks that enable engineering teams to move quickly while maintaining appropriate controls.
  • Partner with security, risk, architecture, and compliance teams to ensure enterprise standards are met.

Technical Leadership & Influence

  • Lead large-scale technical initiatives spanning multiple engineering and technology teams.
  • Influence enterprise technology strategy, engineering standards, and investment priorities.
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders and promote engineering best practices.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts and strategic recommendations to both technical and executive stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 8–10+ years of experience in platform engineering, software engineering, cloud engineering, DevOps, automation engineering, or related technical disciplines.
  • Proven experience designing, implementing, and scaling enterprise platforms, shared services, automation solutions, or developer productivity capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, enterprise-scale technical initiatives across multiple teams.
  • Strong expertise in cloud-native architecture, platform engineering, DevOps, automation, and modern software delivery practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish technical direction, influence engineering strategy, and drive adoption across an organization.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience leading enterprise platform transformations, cloud modernization initiatives, developer experience programs, or AI-enabled engineering initiatives.
  • Experience defining enterprise technology strategy, engineering standards, reference architectures, and roadmaps.
  • Experience implementing AI/LLM solutions, AI agents, agent orchestration, RAG, MCP, or other emerging AI technologies.
  • Experience with SRE, observability, infrastructure automation, and engineering productivity platforms.
  • Relevant certifications in cloud, DevOps, platform engineering, software development, AI/ML, or related technologies.
