Job summary

The City of Winston-Salem, NC is seeking an advanced professional planner to lead complex planning projects, develop area plans, and write policy recommendations. You will coordinate public engagement, review development proposals, and present findings to boards and elected officials.

Requires a Master’s degree in a planning-related field and extensive professional planning experience with project management and policy development.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in planning, geography, architecture, historic preservation, public administration, or related field.
• Progressively responsible planning experience including project management and public engagement.
• Ability to write and present technical planning documents and staff reports.
• Knowledge of land use planning, zoning, and development regulations.
• Ability to coordinate with multiple departments, consultants, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning projects from initiation through adoption, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Coordinate public engagement efforts and present recommendations to officials.
• Develop ordinance amendments and planning policies with stakeholder input.
• Review zoning petitions for consistency with adopted plans and provide staff analyses.
• Represent the department at meetings and build collaborative relationships with the public and partners.
• Manage multiple projects, monitor milestones, and ensure timely completion.
• Coordinate historic resources initiatives and transportation planning reviews as needed.
