Lead Piping Designer Position and Responsibilities
As a Lead Piping Designer with Middough, you will directly execute technical design as well as lead resources to execute piping tasks within multi-discipline design projects. You will work closely with the Piping Department Manager to plan and execute piping work on projects and to utilize shared resources effectively. This is a client-facing role that takes technical ownership of the piping and layout design and helps drive "big picture" project objectives within a design environment.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Establish designs consistent with piping good practices, client requirements / specifications and conformance to Codes & Standards.
- Apply standard drafting techniques to generate and interpret drawings in support of assigned projects and provide guidance and leadership to drafters to ensure that all established Company and client design standards and practices are followed.
- Generate design and detail drawings including orthographic plans / sections and isometrics to support Discipline Leads.
- Generate pipe support details.
- Revise and maintain Piping Line Lists and P&ID's, equipment drawings and models, and project Navisworks models.
- Generate piping and equipment models using Autodesk Plant3D and CADWorx for assigned projects.
- Communicate effectively across multiple departments, project clients and suppliers to obtain project related information.
- Drive the implementation of piping specifications related to the project or client and contribute to finalizing project CAD and design standards.
- Manage and maintain project documentation such as flat files, reference / stick files, online shared digital files and CAD drawings.
- Champion the 3D model and coordinate with fellow engineering and architect leads to ensure a layout design that considers all vendor and company disciplines' designs.
- Plan, facilitate, and conduct 3D model design reviews.
- Develop piping construction scope of work documents.
Education, Experience and Skills
The successful candidate will possess the following:
- Associate Degree in a technical discipline or equivalent, highly preferred but not required.
- Accredited Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is highly valued, but not required.
- 10+ years of experience in designing piping systems and plant layout in a refinery or petrochemical setting, including working with isometrics, creating engineering and/or construction packages, field sketching, and field visits/assignments.
- Working knowledge of Codes and Standards.
- Revit and MicroStation experience are a plus, but not required.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail abilities.
- Strong multitasking and organizational abilities for efficiency.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Physical Requirements
While performing duties of this position, the candidate will:
- Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
- Frequently walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop or kneel, twist/bend, use repeating motions, and communicate verbally and non-verbally.
- Use up-close and distance vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions at client sites, including noise, extreme temperatures, and poor air quality, with safety protections provided and required.
- May require occasional travel to other company locations or client sites, with a valid driver's license and auto insurance required.
