Smart Working is hiring a Lead PHP & Symfony Software Engineer to build mission-critical backend systems with a focus on craftsmanship and ownership. You will lead end-to-end features in a highly collaborative Agile team, mentoring others while maintaining high code quality and secure practices.

You’ll work on scalable systems, design reviews, and test-driven development in a remote-first environment that values ownership and professional growth.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional PHP experience (7.4/8+).
• 3+ years with Symfony framework.
• Strong understanding of design patterns.
• Experience with PHPUnit/Behat or similar.
• Hands-on experience with TDD.
• Familiarity with PHPStan/Psalm or similar.
• Understanding of CI/CD, code coverage and deployments.
• Excellent technical communication and accountability.
• High ownership mindset and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend systems using PHP and Symfony.
• Own features end-to-end from design to production release.
• Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code.
• Apply design patterns consistently across services.
• Build and maintain automated test coverage.
• Promote and practice TDD and secure coding.
• Lead code reviews and mentor others.
• Collaborate with product, design, and QA to deliver robust solutions.
• Break down initiatives into actionable tasks and guide implementation.
• Participate in on-call rotation and monitor system health.
