Job summary

CHRISTUS Health is seeking a Phlebotomy/Lab Assistant to perform phlebotomy and related lab duties under supervision, ensuring prompt specimen handling and accurate processing.

You will train staff, monitor collections, and coordinate with physicians and nursing staff to maintain high-quality patient care. The role emphasizes safety, customer service, and teamwork within a hospital lab environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred
• Completion of Clinical Phlebotomy training program or equivalent required
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Responsibilities

• Meets expectations of the applicable CHRISTUS Health competencies: Leader of Self, Others, or Leaders.
• Customer Service / AIDET / Standards of Behavior.
• Trains and performs competency checklist with all Phlebotomist/laboratory assistant staff.
• Monitors the collection report; resolves problems; completes related paperwork and computer functions.
• Uses centrifuge, prepares and ensures serum/blood specimens are acceptable; prepares specimens for referral to outside reference laboratories; dispenses blood products under supervision of medical technologist.
• Monitors the collection area to assure specimens are collected in a timely manner; assists phlebotomists as needed.
• Handles inquiries and problems, greets customers, provides accurate responses to questions and results inquiries.
• Communicates follow-up information regarding patient care issues to appropriate supervisor/manager.
• Performs clerical duties, client processing, and client service representative duties as assigned.
• Enters orders and cancellations using Hospital LIS; receives and processes specimens; distributes them to departments.
• Maintains laboratory records and reports; monitors chart print rounds and prepares reports for Health Information, faxes or mails reports as requested.
• Specimen collections initiated within appropriate response time; monitors collections pending; resolves problems.
• Works as a team member to complete all patient-related testing/reporting; completes tasks within guideline timeframes.
• Inventory control: monitors stock, places orders, restocks, and notifies supervisor of reorder points; tracks reagents.
