Ensure the timely provision of cost-effective drug therapy contributing to optimal patient outcomes, provide educational support for healthcare practitioners, and support drug-related research.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as an active team member, making positive contributions to patient care outcomes and department goals.
- Demonstrate required attendance and punctuality as scheduled.
- Implement Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee policies, including drug usage evaluation, formulary restrictions, adverse drug reaction reporting, and therapeutic and generic substitutions.
- Participate in the departmental quality improvement program to continually enhance pharmaceutical care, as reflected by operational and patient care indicators.
- Maintain professional competency through continuing education and staff development programs; provide formal and informal in-service education activities.
- Ensure adequate inventory of drugs and supplies; assist in procurement following established procedures.
- Audit and maintain accurate records for controlled substances, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Support drug-related research by assisting in procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of study drugs; design and coordinate research as appropriate.
- Participate in education and training of healthcare practitioners, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, residents, and students.
- Provide accurate drug information to physicians, nurses, patients, and other personnel.
- Supervise daily activities and assist in training pharmacy technicians and interns.
- Ensure proper dispensing of drugs to the correct patient at the right time, using proper techniques.
- Use computer skills to process medication orders and maintain patient information.
- Evaluate medication orders for appropriateness, considering patient-specific factors; consult prescribers as needed.
- Complete staff competencies and perform duties of staff pharmacist.
- Participate in meetings to facilitate service improvements.
- Maintain collaborative relationships with healthcare team members and handle patient care issues.
- Assist with developing quality improvement and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Work collaboratively to evaluate workflow and implement service ideas.
- Develop workflow guidelines, policies, and procedures to maximize productivity.
- Direct and schedule personnel, authorize overtime, and mentor staff.
- Coordinate daily activities of pharmacy staff and demonstrate a service-oriented approach.
- Ensure proper drug dispensing, verify NDC numbers, and supervise staff activities.
- Participate in education and training of healthcare practitioners and students.
- Maintain departmental financial accountability and handle third-party rejects promptly.
