Job summary

Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital in Shelbyville, TN seeks a Certified Surgical First Assistant to deliver perioperative care under supervision, prepare operating rooms, and support the surgical team in the OR, Endoscopy Suite, and Sterile Processing.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved discipline specific program or successful completion of a surgical assistant training program during military service.
• Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience.
• Registration with the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.
• Certification from one of the listed issuing bodies.
• If current employee and employed by VUMC prior to 2010, no certification is required.
• If graduate of surgical assistant armed forces training program, no certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Assists the surgical team during the operative procedure.
• Knowledge of sterile technique and maintenance of sterility of surgical field.
• Ability to circulate all operative cases independently.
• Ability to care for patient in PACU in the immediate postoperative period.
• Completes perioperative record accurately and completely.
• Charges accurately for items used in the operating room.
• Prepares rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment.
• Opens sterile supplies and sets up for procedures.
• Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after terminal cleaning. Monitors and restocks supplies.
