Job summary

Howard University seeks a Lead Perinatal Sonographer to oversee the daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, ensuring equipment performance and high-quality diagnostic imaging. The role requires ARDMS OB/GYN certification and OB experience, with a focus on patient flow and QA.

Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited bachelor's degree in diagnostic medical sonography with ARDMS OB/GYN certification.
• Two years OB experience or internship in OB/MFM.
• BLS or ALS certification a plus.

Responsibilities

• Manage daily operations of the sonographic laboratory and ensure clinical quality assessment.
• Coordinate day-to-day patient flow for efficient service.
• Report equipment failures to ensure timely resolution.
• Supervise onboarding and training of new Perinatal Sonographers.
• Ensure staff follow imaging protocols; implement new techniques and protocols.
• Prepare and deliver preliminary reports on the Viewpoint system.

Basic Function

The Lead Perinatal Sonographer is responsible for daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, equipment performance, and clinical sonographic quality assessment. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for adherence to Howard University FPP Privacy Policy policies and procedures, as well as all applicable federal and state laws as they pertain to healthcare and employment.

Principal Accountabilities

• Acts as the contact person when needed for the Department’s Perinatal Sonographers.
• Ensures ultrasound-related supply levels are always adequate.
• Reports any equipment failures to the appropriate vendor to ensure timely resolution of issues.
• Coordinates day-to-day patient flow to ensure efficiency and an optimal patient experience.
• Participates in the orientation and training of new Perinatal Sonographers.
• Handles daily operational issues such as staff scheduling and reporting sick or absent employees to the Nurse Manager.
• Problem-solves with the in‑house IT department with respect to any IT‑related issues.
• Ensures staff Perinatal Sonographers are following imaging protocols and assists in implementing new techniques and protocols.
• Participates in the formulation and implementation of policies and procedures related to ultrasound.
• Participates in the planning and modification of patient schedule templates for ultrasound.
• Covers for staff Perinatal Sonographers during staff shortages.
• Performs all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
• Acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies.
• Uses independent judgment and systematic problem‑solving methods to produce high‑quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.
• Provides summary findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management.
• Prepares accurate and comprehensive preliminary reports on the Viewpoint system.
• Responsible for room preparation and clean‑up, and equipment sterilization as needed.
• Assumes responsibility for the safety and well‑being of all patients in the sonographic area/department.
• Escorts patients to an examination room or waiting area upon completion of the sonographic examination.
• Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
• Coordinates with other staff to ensure appropriate patient care is provided.
• Recognizes and responds to emergencies, obtaining assistance from and/or referring to physicians when appropriate.
• Responsible for protecting Personal Health Information (PHI) and maintaining compliance with Howard University FPP Privacy Policy.
• Uses the minimum PHI necessary when completing assignments.
• Promotes, establishes, and maintains open and effective communications with all members of Howard University’s Faculty Practice Plan.
• Serves as communication liaison between the physician and the patient.

• Conducts daily patient scheduling and planning activities and performs related clerical and administrative duties.
• Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Core Competencies

• Graduation from an accredited bachelor’s degree program in diagnostic medical sonography or equivalent educational background, current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and at least two years prior OB experience or recent internship in obstetrics or MFM clinic.
• Basic Life Support or Advanced Life Support Certification a plus.
• Nuchal translucency certification through NTQR or Fetal Maternal Foundation

Compliance Salary Range Disclosure

Compensation Range: $120,000 - $130,000
