What you will do- Codes patient medical records.
- Supports coding function in assigning the appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes to medical records and in developing proficiency in use of HIM software.
- Maintains proven coding skills as evidenced by periodic coding quality and productivity reviews.
- Reviews and verifies all codes and abstracted data in a timely manner prior to coding completion. Reviews and completes Xclaim or additional billing questions in a timely manner.
- Interacts and communicates with physicians when necessary.
- Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.
Education/Formal Training Requirements- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Associate's Degree Health Information Management
Work Experience RequirementsLicenses and Certifications Requirements- Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association
- Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based - American Health Information Management Association
- Certified Professional Coder - American Academy of Professional Coders
- Registered Health Information Administrator - American Health Information Management Association
- Registered Health Information Technician - American Health Information Management Association
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Successful completion of Coding Skills Assessment or proven ability to maintain Methodist Healthcare’s Quality and productivity standards. These standards must be maintained in order to retain the OP coding analyst status.
- Ability to foster and maintain good working relationships with internal and external customers including but not limited to supervisors, managers, other Associates and other departments/areas.
- Ability to set priorities, coordinates multiple tasks, organize tasks, and maintain control of workflow.
- Ability to work effectively and productively without close supervision and to exercise independent judgement in decision making.
- Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with others.
- Ability to comprehend moderately complex written materials (i.e. technical manuals, medicolegal documents, etc.).
- Ability to operate standard office equipment (i.e. fax machine, copy machine, etc.).
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT codes.
- Demonstrates skills and knowledge by maintaining a 95% DRG accuracy level.
- Proficient in Windows based software applications.
Supervision Provided by this Position- There are lead responsibilities assigned to this position, including training of Coding Analysts I, Coding Analyst II and other Associates and/or students
Physical Demands- Ability to read and write to communicate both orally and in writing with other individuals.
- Ability to lift, push, pulls and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must possess normal hearing and vision, including the ability to distinguish colors and peripheral vision. Hearing and/or vision correction to near normal is acceptable.
- Demonstrates good physical coordination to stand, walk, climb stair, squat, kneel, sit in one place, reach, twist and bend throughout shift.
- Demonstrates good use of hands for gripping and squeezing as well as repetitive hand and wrist motion.
- Demonstrates good hand/eye coordination.
- Must be available to travel Methodist facilities for meetings as needed if Associate lives with the region.
