GENERAL PURPOSE : Perform manual and machine operator tasks in the set-up, maintenance and operation of a printing press.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Reads and interprets instructions for each job ticket and directs set-up of press based on instructions.
  • Makes job ready by running sets to adjust print quality, registration, & color settings.
  • Makes pre-run inspection of job and receives approval to proceed from supervisor. Runs job to completion.
  • Achieves color before calling supervisor for color OK.
  • Checks offsetting and load temperatures for various printed substrates.
  • Observes and monitors machine operations to detect malfunctions and to determine whether adjustments are needed.
  • Accurately follows instructions.
  • Monitors PH and conductivity of fountain solution and all other press-related chemistry.
  • Completes all required documentation (i.e. shop floor, manual entries, job log, sheet count, running sequence and all other pertinent information).
  • Supervises and trains press feeders and second press operators on the multi-color process.
  • Fosters a positive attitude towards departmental and company objectives creating a team atmosphere.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on press such as lubrication, replacement of small parts, cleaning and minor adjustments and/or replacement of rollers and other small moving parts.
  • Follows all safety policies and directs safety of crew. Keeps abreast of MSDS program, Lockout/Tagout and directs the proper handling/disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Operates or assists on other pressroom equipment and presses if needed and when work load permits. Directs pre-press tasks such as paper trimming when necessary.
  • Assists in cleaning up and keeping immediate work area neat and orderly.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D.
  • Must have good color perception.
  • Must have minimum of five years’ manufacturing experience performing First Press Operator duties on sheet-fed equipment comparable to Heidelberg with knowledge of CP2000 console.
  • Must have working experience with color scanning equipment.
  • Must have experience working with plastic substrates.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Must have basic computer skills (data entry).
  • Must have the ability to perform basic arithmetic including additions, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • Must have the ability to read a ruler.
  • Must have the ability to operate densitometers, spectrophotometers, calculators, computer terminals, gloss meters, PH/conductivity meters and other printing equipment needed to accomplish the task(s).
  • Must be able to work in and around UV (Ultra-Violet) materials.
  • Must possess the following competencies: accuracy, reliability, decision making, time management and self motivation.
  • Must be able to maintain good attendance.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodations.
