Job summary

Farmers Branch seeks a Municipal Building Inspector to ensure that structures and remodeling projects comply with adopted building codes and city ordinances. The role schedules and conducts on-site inspections, reviews plans, and issues notices for deficiencies while mentoring staff and maintaining certifications.

Must have a high school diploma or GED (associate degree preferred), 3 years of inspector experience, and a Texas driver’s license; 5 years in related fields is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
• 3 years municipal building inspector experience.
• 5 years construction, code enforcement, or fire code inspection preferred.
• Knowledge of codes and ordinances; ability to review plans and documentation.
• Valid Texas driver's license with clean driving record.

Responsibilities

• Schedule, coordinate and perform on-site building inspections to ensure code compliance.
• Provide written notices of deficiencies and conduct re-inspections as needed.
• Respond to inquiries from contractors, architects, property owners and citizens.
• Investigate inquiries/complaints regarding work without permits; issue stop-work orders as necessary.
• Monitor new commercial projects and issue notices to facilitate timely project closeout.
• Mentor and assist in related training for city personnel.
• Maintain professional certifications by attending classes and seminars.
• Data entry in permit tracking software; coordinate inspection scheduling; explain policies to the public.
• Review applications, plans and drawings for compliance prior to issuing permits.
• Represent the city in a professional manner at all times.
