Job summary

Cox Fleet is seeking a Lead Mobile Diesel Technician to perform DOT inspections, PMs, and advanced diagnostics on light, medium, and heavy‑duty trucks in a mobile environment. You will mentor other technicians and coordinate on‑site repairs with customers, while upholding safety standards and company procedures.

You’ll manage parts, use Diesel tools, test equipment, and document work in TRAIT on company iOS devices, with a focus on meeting repair times and delivering reliable fleet service

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED with 7 years experience, or related degree/certification with 5 years experience, or 9 years in related field.
  • Must meet DOT/FMCSA requirements and pass pre-employment screening.
  • DOT medical card must be valid or be able to obtain.
  • Must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating rules.

Responsibilities

  • Perform PMs, DOT inspections, and repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in mobile/field environment.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on trucks.
  • Lead on jobsites and mentor other technicians and collaborate with Mobile Technician Manager.
  • Document work and upload photos in TRAIT on company iOS devices.
  • Manage parts inventory and service truck equipment; perform periodic reconciliations.
  • Ensure safety, health and environmental policies and DOT compliance in all tasks.

Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Lead Mobile Diesel Technician. The Lead Mobile Diesel Technician will perform licensed DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light and advanced repairs, advanced mechanical/hydraulic/electrical and electronic diagnostics, and other duties as assigned. The role requires mastery in a majority of technical disciplines, with moderate reliance on advanced diagnostics and triage of complex repairs. The Lead also leads on jobsites and plays a key role in customer interaction. Mentorship of other Technicians and collaboration with Mobile Technician Manager are expected. Duties may include performing the duties of Mobile Technician Manager in their absence.

Duties
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections and follow-up repairs on light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles in a mobile/field environment.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on various truck equipment including electrical/ braking/ cooling systems, starters/alternators, fan clutches, engine electronics, diesel steering systems, engines (gas and diesel), transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differentials, etc.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair truck equipment including similar systems and components as listed above.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Road test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and ensure proper operation.
  • Identify problems, determine relevance of information, and use sound judgment to evaluate alternatives.
  • Independently manage parts inventory and equipment on the company-issued service truck and perform periodic reconciliation.
  • Maintain and operate the company-issued service vehicle, conduct safety checks, and perform pre-/post-trip inspections.
  • Collaborate with clients to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve issues, and meet expectations.
  • Manage concurrent tasks with effective prioritization and time management.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, and Diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
  • Document work according to company standards and upload photos of work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using the TRAIT application on company-issued iOS devices.
  • Complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Work independently and manage daily schedule; maintain high productivity and operate within standard repair times when possible.
  • Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as needed.
  • Communicate with management and support teams to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve PO numbers, and discuss RO findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health and environmental policies and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
  • Support inventory reconciliation and mentor technicians on best practices to stay near standard repair times.
  • Assist Mobile Tech Manager with quality control inspections on work performed by Mobile Diesel Technicians.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g., related degree/certification with 5 years of experience, or 9 years in a related field).
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
  • Obtain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications: T8 (PMI), C1 (Service Consultant), and 608/609 within 18 months.
  • Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) FMCSA requirements, including successful completion of a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and a DOT physical prior to employment.
  • A valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining until expiration may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical; if four months or less remain, a DOT physical will be required.
  • Candidates must be at least 21 years old due to interstate operating authority regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.

Compensation: Hourly pay range is $35.58 – $53.37/hour. Final rate may vary based on location and candidate qualifications. Position may be eligible for additional compensation such as commissions or incentive programs.
