Description Of Work
Join the Nebraska Mesonet team, where we operate a statewide network of over 70 automated weather monitoring stations designed to provide high-quality environmental and meteorological data in real time. These data are vital for agricultural management, weather forecasting, emergency planning, and research on climate and environmental changes. Our goal is to provide the highest quality data and make it accessible to everyone, whether they are monitoring local weather for their family, farm, or a federal agency.
As a Lead Mesonet Technician, you will:
- Exercise leadership and supervision of NE Mesonet field technicians for the maintenance and buildout of the NE Mesonet
- Perform all aspects of timely and high-quality maintenance and installations of NE Mesonet weather stations
- Ensure proper site selection and follow site survey practices
- Oversee inventory and record keeping of NE Mesonet assets, including vehicle maintenance
- Coordinate maintenance and installation logistics and scheduling
- Work with a wide range of individuals, including landowners, clients, vendors, UNL staff/faculty, and NE State Climate Office to maintain an efficient and high-quality data stream for NE Mesonet stakeholders and data end users.

Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, electronic technology, or related field, plus two years of experience working with data collection, including atmospheric/environmental measurement sensors, cellular modems, dataloggers, and/or similar equipment. Additional relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
- Two years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of and ability to work with electronic equipment and communication devices.
- Knowledge of sensor calibration and maintenance and repair of environmental monitoring stations.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and supervise a team.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
- Experience with Campbell Scientific dataloggers.
