Job summary

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is seeking a Lead Mental Health Technician (RTC) to support the clinical team in a residential/acute setting for youths aged 8-21. The role reports to the Nurse Manager and involves implementing care plans, supervising unit activities, and ensuring safety and documentation compliance.

The ideal candidate has 1+ year in psychiatric settings, correct certifications (CPR, First Aid, Handle with Care), a Virginia driver's license, and the ability to lead a small

• At least 1 year of experience in residential, acute, or inpatient psychiatric settings.
• Associate’s Degree in Psychology or related field from an accredited institution.
• At least 2 years of experience in residential, acute, or inpatient psychiatry.
• High school diploma or GED with at least 3 years of experience working with children.
• CPR and First Aid certified; Handle with Care training.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Preferred: 1 year of experience leading a team in a unit or department.

Position Summary

Responsible as a member of the program team, observes and reports physical and behavioral symptoms under the supervision of the Acute Nurse Manager and/or Registered Nurse. The Lead Mental Health Technician (MHT) is an active participant in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for patients, implements functional behavioral assessment/behavior intervention plans. The Lead MHT will provide additional support to the leadership team by providing oversight of the unit supplies, unit activities, and staff unit paperwork.

Qualifications

Must have least one (1) year of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting; an Associate’s Degree in Psychology or related field from an accredited University or College and at least two (2) years of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting; a high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) and a minimum of three (3) years of experience working with children. Must be Handle with Care, CPR and First Aid certified and hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Prefer 1 year of experience leading a team in a unit and/or department.
