Job summary

Newport News Behavioral Health Center is seeking a Lead Mental Health Technician to support residential and acute psychiatric care for youth aged 8–21. You will observe and report symptoms, contribute to treatment plans, and help lead a unit with oversight of daily activities and paperwork.

Qualifications include an associate degree in psychology or related field, 1–2 years in psychiatric settings, CPR/First Aid and a Virginia driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year in residential/acute/inpatient psychiatric settings.
• Associate’s Degree in Psychology or related field required.
• At least 2 years in residential/acute psychiatric settings; 3 years with children (GED).
• CPR and First Aid certification; valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; leadership experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Observe and report physical and behavioral symptoms under supervision.
• Participate in implementing physical care, therapeutic activities, and academic programs.
• Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for patients.
• Provide oversight of unit supplies, activities, and staff paperwork.

Position Summary

Responsible as a member of the program team, observes and reports physical and behavioral symptoms under the supervision of the Acute Nurse Manager and/or Registered Nurse. The Lead Mental Health Technician (MHT) is an active participant in the implementation of physical care, therapeutic activities, and the academic program. Assist in planning and implementing treatment programs for patients, implements functional behavioral assessment/behavior intervention plans. The Lead MHT will provide additional support to the leadership team by providing oversight of the unit supplies, unit activities, and staff unit paperwork.

Qualifications

Must have least one (1) year of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting; an Associate’s Degree in Psychology or related field from an accredited University or College and at least two (2) years of experience working in a residential, acute or inpatient psychiatric setting; a high school diploma or a General Education Development Certificate (G.E.D.) and a minimum of three (3) years of experience working with children. Must be Handle with Care, CPR and First Aid certified and hold a valid Virginia Driver’s License. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. Prefer 1 year of experience leading a team in a unit and/or department.
